Review

Praise for Kitty Neale:

"A gritty tale” BELLA

"Neale makes Cookson's earthiest stories look a little tame." PETERBOROUGH EVENING TELEGRAPH

WATERSTONE’S
"Don't always be put off by the term "page-turner" – this book is in no way a pile of slushy nonsense. At its core is family life – the ups and downs of marriage and the parent/child bond – ranging from the worst excesses of childhood sexual abuse to a love so dutiful that a mother will conspire to break a young girl's heart with the sole purpose of protecting her son. From Post war London to the Swinging 60s this book is a rare thing indeed. Please read and enjoy."
For Cuckoo in Candle Lane

Annie Groves, author of SOME SUNNY DAY.

'Heartbreakingly poignant and joltingly realistic. From the first page the
characters and their lives drew me in. It combines wonderfully accurate
historical detail with true gritty realism in a book that fans of misery
lit won't want to miss.'

3.0 out of 5 stars An okay, slightly Predictable Read 25 April 2010
Format:Paperback
This is the first Kitty Neale book I have read - and it was okay. But having read similar books like these (books set in the 50s & 60s) I found it slightly predictable. The thing that really niggled me was that I spotted about 10 spelling/grammatical mistakes - a sign the proof-reader didn't do a brilliant job. I also thought the book just ended all of a sudden - like the author got fed up of writing and just thought 'right better round this one off.' If you are a fan of Josephine Cox you will most likely enjoy this book.

How does she keep producing these fantastic page turners??? I've been up late for the past 2 nights, unable to put the book down to sleep! A story of real life that I would highly recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars nobodys girl 10 Sep 2007
By Mhughes
Format:Paperback
A GREAT READ THAT YOU WILL FIND YOURSELF BECOMING DRAWN INTO THE CHARACTERS AND THEIR SITUATIONS.
SLIGHTLY DISSAPPPOINTED WITH THE ENDING-I WONT SPOIL THE STORY BUT IT ALL UNFOLDS TOO QUICKLY WITHIN THE LAST FEW PAGES AND I FIND IT INCONVINCING THAT THE MAIN CHARACTER (PEARL) DOES NOT QUESTION THE SUPRISE VISTOR FURTHER.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Story, badly written 2 Jan 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
A good story, a little far-fetched at times, especially the 'Bessie visions'. It was riddled with spelling and grammatical errors and a lot of the dialogue used contained too many modern day expressions, which I don't remember people using in the '50s. Kitty Neale needs to look for a more competent proof reader. Also thought her style of writing was rather poor, some of the chapters didn't seem to have a beginning or end and jumped from one scene to another without even a paragraph break.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Story 20 Oct 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Another great book from Kitty Neale. Fortunately I saw in previous reviews that this is the first book to read before A Father's Revenge as this is the sequel to Nobody's Girl. If you haven't read Nobody's Girl make sure you read it first. I haven't finished A Father's Revenge but it is as good as Nobody's Girl so far.
