5.0 out of 5 stars A hidden gem 28 May 2005
Format:DVD
Out of a bumper box of 40 dodgy films on DVD, I watched this one because I was bored and fancied a stupid chick flick.
This film is great-Gary Oldman is almost unrecognisable under half a pound of make-up, and Skeet Ulrich is instantly sympathetic as a simple but nice jailbait boy.
Basically: Ulrich is orphaned as a baby, and ends up in correctional facility and then jail: his constant companion and surrogate daddy is the elder Oldman. Both escape and get seperated: Ulrich is forced to hitchike out of the state, when he witnesses a fatal car accident, and manages to extract a survivor: a baby girl.
The story is narrated: actually Ulrich reading out a letter adressed to the baby girl, at some time in the future. He nick-names the girl 'Loosy'and forms an unbreakable bond with her.
Oldman meets up with him and the two try to hide from the law on a troubled trailer park. However, people are not just looking for them, they're looking for the baby as well..
This isn't a soppy 3 Men and a Baby type of film: there's no comedy, or 'fish out of water' scenes involving the really cute baby girl, despite the rather comedic looking covers on some of the DVD's. The relationship between Ulrich and his 'daughter' is touching, and the bond between him and his 'dad' Oldman poignant at times. There's also a surprise turn from Mary Steenburgen as a trailer-trash ex-mom.
This film is basically about the roles of fathers: from Ulrich's adoptive, adoring father, to Oldmans misguided pseudo-father figure, to Mary Steenburgen's absentee 'fling,' and the (albeit it, brief) father who gambles his families life to exact revenge on hitch-hiker Ulrich.
Its a touching, complex film, without being muchy or over-sentimental. I thought it was a decent chick-flick, but my boyfriend enjoyed it too (more for Gary Oldman, though)
Overall, a very good little film.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a fantastic film 1 July 2009

Nobody's Baby [DVD] [2001]. This is a truly funny film. The storyline is both original and entirely believable. The way it's put together is great. Its a bit of a dark comedy, but thats not so say its not hilariously funny. And look at the cost.... Hey, buy this film!
