Product Description

The brilliant new Istanbul crime novel from Barbara Nadel delves into the shocking world of honour killing

Turkey: the police are called to the scene of what seems to be the honour killing of a young girl. Burnt alive, she is not the first girl to suffer such an horrific death in Istanbul. Further investigations by Inspectors Cetin Ikmen and Mehmet Suleyman reveal that the girl had a secret boyfriend who has now disappeared. He and the girl's family are prime suspects, even though forensic evidence is scant. Why does the family, in common with other families of girls immolated in the city, now appear to be broke? There are also links to an infamous local gangster. Religion, organised crime and the lengths some people will go to in order to conform, come together in a tragic story of violence in a divided and changing society. And Mehmet Suleyman is on the verge of making a mistake that could ruin his career...

A Noble Understanding 28 Feb 2011
Format:Hardcover
A Noble Killing looks into the strange reasoning and motivation behind so called 'honour killings' arising originally in tribal communities and sheltered villages where girls are kept cloistered at home while unmarried in order to preserve their 'purity' It's not that long ago that Victorian fathers in Britain did much the same. And a family was equally dishonoured if the girl got up to mischief. You have only to read Jane Austen. However, most of these fathers contented themselves with disowning or turning the girl on the streets, 'killing' them in a different manner.

This story explores the Muslim faith, religious fanaticism, racism, tribalism and its attendant evils. Barbara Nadel is a writer who has a compassionate and unbiased attitude towards such matters. She writes with warmth, understanding and looks deep into the human soul. I always feel I have learnt something new from her books, understood a little more about other people, whose attitudes are far more emotional and dramatic than our own, yet who suffer from the same human failings, loves and longings. Her characters are so real, so interesting.

But this is also an exciting crime story and draws one in from the first page until the end. Impossible to put down - so be warned. Make time to read this novel.

After the last novel's undistinguished trip to London, we are back on firmer ground in Istanbul.
The main theme is so-called "honour killing" which appear to be some part of some Islamic cultures. The novel deals with these in present day Istanbul, generally among newly arrived county dwellers.
The novel is her usual mix of crime novel, Ottoman history & modern Turkey & strongly shows that she knows her subject based on her being a frequent visitor & also perhaps because of her background, cf The Last Kabalist in Lisbon.
Up to her usual standards after all that she has written in this series (I've read & reread them all).
I would like to read her history of modern Turkey (please) & compare it to Birds without wings even if it is a novel.

Honor Killings in Istanbul 22 Feb 2012
By zorba - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Barbara Nadel's formidable character, Istanbul Inspector Cetin Ikmen, stumbles upon a fire which turns out to be an "honor killing" at the home of a family which had migrated from the countryside. Honor killings (where traditional families will murder a daughter who they contend dishonors her family by "unacceptable" behavior) still occasionally occur in modern Istanbul (and elsewhere). Ikmen and his colleagues set out to find the guilty parties. In so doing, they uncover a whole lot of other things. This is a creditable piece of work by author Nadel but it is not fast-moving nor tension-filled. The plot is worthy but proceeds at a somewhat plodding pace. There is a long cast of characters, most having Turkish names (naturally) which are unfamiliar to most European/American eyes, and which force the reader to often consult the printed list of characters in the front of the book. In other words, the book will not keep you awake at nights. But it WILL give you an interesting story and shed light on a phenomenon which still takes place. I enjoyed it and intend to read more books from Nadel's long body of work featuring this irrestible character in his fascinating city.
