A Noble Killing looks into the strange reasoning and motivation behind so called 'honour killings' arising originally in tribal communities and sheltered villages where girls are kept cloistered at home while unmarried in order to preserve their 'purity' It's not that long ago that Victorian fathers in Britain did much the same. And a family was equally dishonoured if the girl got up to mischief. You have only to read Jane Austen. However, most of these fathers contented themselves with disowning or turning the girl on the streets, 'killing' them in a different manner.
This story explores the Muslim faith, religious fanaticism, racism, tribalism and its attendant evils. Barbara Nadel is a writer who has a compassionate and unbiased attitude towards such matters. She writes with warmth, understanding and looks deep into the human soul. I always feel I have learnt something new from her books, understood a little more about other people, whose attitudes are far more emotional and dramatic than our own, yet who suffer from the same human failings, loves and longings. Her characters are so real, so interesting.
But this is also an exciting crime story and draws one in from the first page until the end. Impossible to put down - so be warned. Make time to read this novel.
