Product Description

Synopsis

Among the many treasures of the Royal Photograph Collection at Windsor is a handsome album entitled "The Property of the Queen - Photographs of Dogs in the Royal Kennel, Windsor". It is perhaps the earliest official record of the Royal Family and their many canine companions - from Queen Victoria's beloved confidante, her spaniel, Dash, to Prince Albert's elegant greyhounds; from Edward VII and his charming if disreputable fox-terrier, Caesar, to Queen Alexandra and her collection of exotic toy-dogs. Taking the album as its starting point, this book records over a century of royal pets, immortalised with owners and without. Paintings and works of art from the Royal Collection complete the story - or stories, in some cases - the creation of Landseer's famous painting "Dignity and Impudence", the arrival of the first Pekinese in England, and Caesar's finest hour, as a masterpiece from the workshop of Carl Faberge.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fur and loathing at the Palace, 19 Oct 2007
By Mr. Thomas Cooper - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
IT'S not often an event combines two of your greatest dislikes, so how could I resist an invitation to the the launch of Noble Hounds and Dear Companions at Buckingham Palace.

Whilst my temporary dislike of dogs stems from an association with a particularly sociopathic Jack Russell, it has to be said that my antipathy to the Royal Family is far more deep-seated and longstanding. With this in mind I was quite curious what I would make of Sophie Gordon's new book.

I surprise myself in saying that it is really very charming. As Sophie, the curator of the photograph collection, said at the launch, it is a family collection and as such it is something we can all relate too. And if you think about it, that in itself is quite a revealing statement.

For centuries Royalty promoted a myth that they were somehow different to, and worthy of the obsequiesness of, their subjects. The transition to a Royal myth of ordinariness has moved in fits and starts but has been particularly rapid in the post-Diana period. That many of the pictures in the book had never been published before demonstrates this progression. Publishing the family photographs just wouldn't have done when one was trying to be a family apart.

Alright the people in the book are better dressed, the dogs better fed (than most of the Royal subjects perhaps) and the photographers more accomplished than in our family albums, but what really stands out about the collection is its very ordinariness. While a dog, or a cat for that matter, can look at a king, getting them to look at a camera is probably no easier in a palace than in a terraced house.

So do get this book - it will make a great Christmas present. And come 3pm on Christmas Day, get out your pets' photographs, open the book, switch on the telly and ponder what is the difference between you and them (or them and you if you are reading this Your Majesty) and ask yourself why are you taking a blind bit of notice about what the woman on the screen is saying?
