5.0 out of 5 stars The greatest, strangest, most creative tabletop RPG on earth., 24 Dec 2008
By Donal Fallon "donalfall" (Ireland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Nobilis is an out-of-print tabletop RPG that was one of the most left-of-field successes of RPG history. On one hand, given how many gamers are fans of Neil Gaiman's Sandman series, the concept of playing as Gods who control certain themes or concepts of reality should be an easy sell. But with no dice and no ultimate control for the GM (or "Hollyhock God" in Nobilis parlance), it falls into a very small category of games that step outside the norm of dice, paper and plots dictated by one person.

It's a very narrative game, and far more inclined to a group of players who are willing to collaborate in the creation of a "shared universe". The system encourages as much player input as GM input, and with the players inhabiting a demense or "Realm" that they have more control over than the "Hollyhock God", there's lots of scope for the players to control the narrative.

It's not recommended for anyone who wants a tight, regulated rules system - while the rules are present, they're more ad hoc than simulationist. But if you're ready for deep storytelling and your idea of "challenging" your players is more about politicking and really roleplaying their characters, then this is a game worth trying out (Although the current price tag is a little steep for "trying out").

The print itself is worth seeing - Nobilis comes in a massive, hardback coffee table book that is just sumptuous. Even if you don't like the game itself, its presentation makes RPG books seem grown up. :)
