To compact an all encompassing subject matter into such a slim volume must have been a daunting task for Chris Brazier. I could only admire the way he makes the task appear so effortless. Brazier, of New Internationlist, wears his heart on his sleeve and the text is never less than provocative. He'll be criticised for his lack of neutrality but I actually quite enjoyed this aspect of the book. I'm not a reader of New Internationlist nor particularly subscribe to its political stance but found his openness to be far less misleading than an 'objective' history. In fact, because it is written in such a lucid, humorous and spitting tone it made reading the text far more of an active process making me consider if I agreed or disagreed with the author. In turn, this made the book far more memorable. I bought the book becasue my knowledge of history didn't really account for the order and significance of events. It has helped me to think of history in context and also acted as an introduction to certain historical eras or larger volumes on World History.
