4.0 out of 5 stars Good tips and techniques, 3 Jan 2002
By S. Jones "s. jones" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book takes the sewer through a capsule wardrobe of 8 garments (full-sized patterns for which come free with the book) plus a scarf. Each chapter goes through the construction of a garment in a lot of detail, which is very useful as most commercial patterns don't. There is a great deal of advice on choosing and handling fabrics - something I find difficult - and techniques to save time and improve the quality of home-sewn garments.
My only disappointment is that some of the designs are rather boxy in shape - suitable for big-boned, rectangular or apple-shaped figures. But those of us who are petite, hourglass or pear-shaped will not find them so flattering. If this applies to you it maybe better to substitute more fitted commercial patterns, but you can still follow the tips and techniques and apply them.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very practical and wearable clothes., 14 Jun 1999
By A Customer
These patterns are easy to follow and adjust for a short, round person. My favorites are the six gore skirt and the jacket. With just these two outfits, I could make a whole wardrobe. The jacket has seams down the front and the collar is easy to attach. It has bias seams at the shoulders and it looks double-breasted but isn't. It also looks very hard to make but isn't since the sleeves are attached to the body of the jacket. The vertical lines are very slimming. This is the best sewing book I've used yet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Use this book as a starting point on your new wardrobe!, 28 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This is a wonderful book for anyone who wants to make more than silly frou-frou things and other stuff that collects dust. I prefer utility, and these clothes are utility and fashion at the same time. I've made two tuxedo shirts, two dresses (one cowl-necked with a matching scarf), seven pairs of slim pants, one t-shirt, and plan to make a lot more, plus some I haven't done yet. These are the clothes that look good, are easy to make, easy to wear, and have endless variations. Soon I hope to make a nice poly/wool jacket, and maybe a cool-weather dress with a vest. I'm still thinking about trying the palazzo pants, but I didn't buy this book for that. The other garments are not going to be out of style anytime soon, even if the palazzo pants are. Unfortunately, I think about how to make these clothes while I'm driving, which is not safe in Houston. But really--measure twice, cut once, and enjoy the easiest to make modern clothes around.

1.0 out of 5 stars Badly outdated and useless if it doesn't have the patterns
This is very firmly stuck in 1980's fashion, enough to make me shudder. If you love the wide palazzo pant and baggy shirt look, then fine, if not then avoid. Read more
