Product Description

No Surrender by Dale Lucas is a novella inspired by HP Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos.

In the wake of the American Civil War, Union Army Lieutenant Nathan Kenning commands a detachment of peacekeeping troops in Tampa, Florida. Their mandate: to police the area, assist the harried Freedmen’s Bureau and defend the thousands of emancipated slaves in the region from Confederate reprisal. Then, one fateful evening, a ragged madman stumbles into town ranting about mass murder and black magic in an adjacent county. War-weary but determined, Lieutenant Kenning leads a small detachment into the swampy countryside to investigate the madman’s reports of disgruntled Confederate soldiers running a brutal campaign of terror and murder… and, just possibly, awakening an ancient evil beyond mankind’s influence or understanding…

5.0 out of 5 stars If you like True Detective, No Surrender should be part of your "required reading" 10 Mar 2014

Historical fiction meets Cthulu mythos in Reconstruction-era Florida—to me, this novella is a great accompaniment to True Detective and its accompanying reading list—it’s a little bit Southern Gothic, but with the atmospheric horror of Lovecraft, drawing on a number of threads of Lovecraft’s Cthulu mythos and re-imagining the concepts in a manner that is truly unique. The author writes primarily noir fiction, which greatly contributes to the solid pace of action and efficiency of setting up each scene. The amount of historical research that went into the novella is evident in the story’s solid grasp of Floridian history during the time in which the story is set, and the author’s ear for dialogue and the precision of regional dialect and historical diction makes the “long short story” an accessible, tightly constructed story that hits all the right notes and leaves the reader wishing there had been just a *little* bit more.
