4.0 out of 5 stars A fun title - worth a watch, 9 Jan 2006
By Kevin Macphail (Isle of Lewis, Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Unlike the previous reviewer that I believe was speaking of another film this one is a funny title about the a new night club manager who, on his first night, discovers that there has been a huge mistake; the orange lodge and knights of st colombus have been booked in together. Not wishing to offend either he invites both to enter. What ensues is one of the funniest hogmanay parties in years with both sides continually fighting with each other.

However the plot has a more serious darker side to it aswell, the night club is run by gangsters and there are numerous incidents and references to the paramilitary organisations (although these are never actually named). Although the film seems to have two sides to it a funny and a serious dark side, I believe it is meant to be a comedy. It's the laughs that I remember.

A very enjoyable film, but don't take it too seriously.

4.0 out of 5 stars th greatest martial arts film ever!, 28 Nov 2000
By A Customer
this film is bad and not in the literal sense. corey feldman is a mean mother karate student, they steal cars and tv's and stuff. coreys in a group of bad dudes called the scorpions. they kill some little squirts brother by accident in a house burglery and make it look like a suicide by hanging the guy up on a basketball post(aided with about 50 basketballs below him?) so this little guy seeks revenge and joins the scorpions to go under cover and find out about his brothers death, along the way befriending one of the bad guys turned good, who was tony the black drummer from california dreams. thats about it apart from a death match between mako and feldman at the end and not to forget a high speed chase. this film could'nt be anymore 80's and a corey classic despite the fact it was made in the 90's. finally the same dojo from the karate kid film is used by the lions(good guys) dojo!

5.0 out of 5 stars Long overdue a re-release, 31 May 2009
By Kevan Cooke "fatslug" (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This dark Eighties comedy was a rare foray onto the big screen by Alan Bleasdale. Many of his regulars, including both Bernard Hill and Michael Angelis from Boys From The Black Stuff, are present, and there is a memorable cameo from Elvis Costello as a hapless magician.

The plot revolves around a chaotic night at a club, as the new manager comes to realise that acts and events have been booked by his predecessor specifically to sabotage his first night.

This film was surely the inspiration for Peter Kay's television series Phoenix Nights, and is long overdue a re-release.
