Biography

Motörhead's overwhelmingly loud and fast style of heavy metal was one of the most groundbreaking styles the genre had to offer in the late '70s. Though the group's leader, Lemmy Kilmister, had his roots in the hard-rocking space rock band Hawkwind, Motörhead didn't bother with his old group's progressive tendencies, choosing to amplify the heavy biker rock ... Well, technically Leeds too. But here we have it, Motörhead at their absolute finest, the `classic' line up firing on all cylinders in the North of England. On the back of the masterful `Ace of Spades' album with material from the aforementioned album, `Bomber`, `Overkill' and self titled debut their was no way in hell that this could not absolutely kill. And it does....

The fact that this was recorded in Newcastle City Hall is of particular value to me as it's where I go to see Motörhead every year, so that makes this album just that little more special for me. But still even without this added bonus this is still an iconic album, as it's full of Motörhead classics and great performances. So people complain about the sound quality of this album but considering that the Motörhead live sound is very hard to capture this is excellently produced and also you could take into account that this sounds completely awesome. Lemmy's bass and Eddie's guitar have the right degree of separation, both of them being bloody loud but never drowning the other out for instance all of Eddie's solos and Lemmy's in `Stay Clean' are perfectly audible. The drums sound excellent as well.

As far as song selection goes, the only real fault is that there isn't enough, but still more than enough Motörclassics to satisfy and then some. The only non classic song here is `Iron Horse' which is good but not in the league with the others as say Motörhead's debut wasn't in league with `Overkill', `Bomber' and `Ace of Spades'.

I loved this album when I first bought it on vinyl, and it still sounds great now on cd. It belongs in the collection of anybody into hard, loud, up-tempo rock music.
Save yourself money by buying the single cd version. I paid extra for the 2 cd "special edition", and the extra disc just contains inferior recordings of the same songs. Probably the ones that were rejected for the original release.
I do actually think "Everything louder than everyone else" is their best live cd, whereas this is the one people know because it was released at the height of Motorhead's fame. Buy either and you won't be disappointed.

Still sounds great almost 30 years after it was recorded. One of the great live rock albums of the late twentieth century, this is the closest you'll get to the overwhelming experience that is Motorhead live, like being run over by a train. Motorhead have never been a straightforward heavy metal band, Lemmy's rockabilly roots and punk sensibilities are in evidence throughout, accompanied here by the classic lineup of Fast Eddie Clarke on guitar and Philthy Animal Taylor on drums. Only three guys producing a true wall of sound, it is said that all the best bands are three-pieces. This is Motorhead's most commercially successful album to date, reaching number 1 in the charts, as the band benefitted from their punk/metal/biker crossover appeal and the chart success of the preceding "Ace of Spades" single and album. Possibly this was too hard an act to follow up, as Lemmy admitted this album was their "downfall" as well as their greatest success. The following studio album "Iron Fist" saw a dilution of the band's creativity, and soon after that the departure of Fast Eddie, who had grown tired of relentless touring, and getting pumped up on drugs to reach the state of intensity required to perform this sort of music this well.

Though surprisingly danceable at times, it's not for the faint-hearted: this is very noisy, uncompromising, aggressive music mostly at a quicker amphetamine-fuelled tempo than the studio recordings of the same tracks. Turn it up as loud as your speakers can stand, your neighbours will love it too! Contains the definitive versions of "Overkill" "Bomber" and "Motorhead" plus bonus recordings previously issued as single b-sides back in the 80s (the band couldn't quite find enough material for a double album).

Having listened to motorhead in my late teens and gone to their concerts I eventually drifted away as I got older. However I recently saw the CD and decided to buy it for old times sake. I waited until my wife and children were out and put it into the CD player.... and turned up the volume. It was brilliant, the windows shook, and the bass blew my ears off. I was right back in the concert hall 20 years ago. I'm sorry I waited so long. This is a real "Blast from the past". Go get it.
