ALEX CORNISH No Shore
Bellevue Records
The new record from this highly talented musician follows on relatively quickly from last years successful "Call Back" album. Sometimes this can indicate a lessening of quality in terms of writing and ideas however that is far from the case here. Alex obviously has a mix of drive and fecundity moving him along his chosen path and it is working. This is a songsmith whose output is of the highest quality. I understand that "No Shore" was recorded and mixed over a short period of time, once again at home on the shores of the Forth estuary, and it must be an ideal place for Alex's creativity. Whatever the vibe inspired by the view it works and I would love to have just one ounce of his talent. Ably supported by his regular touring band of Paul Gilbody upright bass, Simon Berriman drums and Bevis Hungate keyboards plus assorted horn players you get ten cracking tracks for your money. I am really taken by music where there are lots of ideas, light and shade with different time signatures throughout. This all helps to keep things fresh for the listener. There is just so much to enjoy here from the slow yearning wistful opener 'Storm To Pass' that segues beautifully into 'Rely' with the fabulous understated trumpet that momentarily comes through at you. The dramatic start to 'Open Your Eyes' is repeated at key moments throughout the song making this one of my favourites and again that trumpet/French horn is just brought in to set off the keyboards to great effect. Can you get a more romantic line than "And your eyes light up like the skyline of Paris"? I doubt it but track four uses it to great effect in the deceptively simple love song 'Skyline Of Paris'. As the last strains of the closing song 'This Is The Point' drift off you just want to go back to the start again. In fact when it first arrived I played it four times on the trot and loved every single second of it. Yes it is that good an album. Buy it make this lad into the success he deserves to be.
