Biography

Prior to singing with the Simon Sisters, beginning at the beginning of my life, things were fairly quiet. Lucy, Joey and I sang throughout our childhood's, first in Greenwich Village (where I was kicked out of family choir for being obstreperous and willful), and then at our lovely homes in Riverdale, NY and Stamford, Connecticut. We sang as a trio, and then Lucy and I began singing in ... Read more in Amazon's Carly Simon Store

Having recently bought the very disappointing "Never Been Gone" by Carly Simon, I just had to go back and re-visit "No Secrets" which I originally bought years ago as a music cassette, and what a contrast. "No Secrets" is full of stirring songs superbly sung when Carly was at her best. If you haven't got this classic album, buy it! If you have it, dust it off and play it again - and don't waste your money like I did buying "Never Been Gone"!

Carly Simon's 1972 "No Secrets" album was her big breakthrough effort, although clearly the singer-songwriter was building up to such a success. Simon was not one of those artists who had a big debut album and then failed to build on her initial success. Her self-titled debut album had one great song, "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be," while her second album "Anticipation" had the title track and "Legend in Your Own Time." "No Secrets" offers up a trio of hits for Simon, the smash hit "You're So Vain" (one of those songs that was so big they overplayed it to death), the sublte "We Have No Secrets," and my favorite off the album, "The Right Thing to Do." Ironically, Simon's exploration of love in her songwriting was muted by her (at that point) happy marriage to James Taylor, who wrote "Night Owl" for her (he was also the subject of "The Right Thing to Do" and sings song background vocals along with Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney). Credit goes to not only Simon's songwriting skill but also to producer Richard Perry, who brought in Paul Buckmaster to do orchestrations (Buckmaster worked on all those great early Elton John albums). Unfortunately, for some reason Buckmaster only did strings on Simon's 1974 "Hotcakes" album (most notably on "Haven't Got Time for the Pain"). The result is that "No Secrets" stands out as far and away Simon's best album, representing her strength at what is called "confessional" songwriting.

This review is aimed at anyone who enjoys the music on this album and is interested in the DVD-Audio release.

I have 50+ DVD-A and SACD discs and this particular one is right up there with the best of them. I am so impressed with it that I was compelled to write this review. With a DVD-Audio player, you can access stereo playback from this disc at 192 kHz/24-bit. It's a luxurious sound, and the vocals sound smooth and life-like. The surround-sound remix available on the disc is also extremely good and thankfully free of any gimmicks. I would even go as far as to say that I prefer to listen to this album in surround rather than in stereo, and that's a rarity for me.

VERY highly recommended.

I think this was the second LP (if anyone remembers those) I ever bought. The first being either Carole King Tapestry or Cat Stevens Teaser and the Firecat. Wonderful music still sounds as fresh today as it did in the late sixties

Great CD. A classic album of the 70s with iconic tracks. This takes you back to a less complicated era, well it was for me as I was only a teenager! A package of memories in a disc.
