Rick would do anything for his girlfriend. He'd even spend his vacation in the wilderness, walking the trails around Fern Lake. After what happened last time, it's the one place in the world he'd prefer not to go. But Bert is a woman with a passion for the outdoors - and a passion for other things too. Rick would follow her to hell and back - which is what he's about to do. Gillian is off on vacation too, only her idea of a holiday is a little weird. She likes breaking into people's homes while they are away and living there. Pity that this time she chances on the home of a serial-killer. The kind of guy who likes to take his female victims out into the wilderness for his fun. Rick and Bert are not the only ones heading to Fern Lake...
About the Author
Richard Laymon grew up in California and took a BA in English Literature from Willamette University, Oregon, and an MA from Loyola University, Los Angeles. He worked as a schoolteacher, a librarian and a mystery magazine editor before working full-time as a writer. He died in February 2001.

This book is mainly set in the mountains.It is written in true Laymon fashion in the fact that it is difficult to put down but it seems like it is a slow starter with a very quick ending.However brilliant this book is,if you have only just discovered Laymon i would reccommend one of his other novels first.But there is no escaping the fact that this man was a literary genius.

My second book by the author, the first being Island. It follows the same sort of style, plenty of blood, guts and rape.... Not for the easily offended.
The novel is almost split into two separate stories that come together near the close of the book. It is written in almost alternating chapters, and this works well at building up the suspense.
The first story follows Rick and his girlfriend Bert. He has agreed to go on a hiking holiday but failed to tell her about an incident in his past that increases his paranoia about bad things happening the further they get from civilisation. Along the way they encounter crazed preachers, a group of lads and lesbian campers.....
The second story follows Gillian. She likes to take her holidays by breaking into rich peoples houses while they are on vacation and using their facilities (in particular the bath). Unluckily for her the next person she does this to is a serial killer who likes taking his victims far out into the wilderness where he rapes and kills them.
A nice book where the pages just flew by, not recommended for everyone, but I can't wait to check out more of Laymon's works.

Wow - talk about gripping... There are two stories that end up crashing together spectacularly!
Firstly there is Gillian, who has a strange hobby - she breaks into peoples houses and lives there whilst they are away. Sadly, this hobby has dire consequences when she chooses the wrong house to break into. Poor Gilliam find herself in the house of a madman - will she get out of this one!
Then there are Bert and Rick, who innocently go on a camping trip to Fern Lake. The trip starts well, with the only hinderance being a couple of 'mouthy' lads who seem to follow them for a while. Rick is extremely uneasy - he has not told Bert about the time he came camping with his Father and Step Mother... maybe if he had they would not have ended up in the awful situation that they find them selves in.
No Sanctuary has so many twists and turns that it will hold your interest throughout. Just when you think 'I know whats coming next' something completely different happens! The way these two stories come together is magic.
This is definately a real page turner, you shouldn't miss the chance to read this book!
