Product Description

In the late 1970s, racist thugs were on the march. The bootboys of the National Front and the British Movement paraded their extremist views and targeted minorities and political opponents ... until a group of working-class activists decided to fight back. They vowed to drive the nazis off the streets not with placards and speeches but by any means necessary.

The Squads were born, and so began a secret conflict. Shopping centres, meeting halls and public houses became the setting for pitched battles that broke out everywhere from London to Glasgow, Manchester to Leeds. Slowly the far right were beaten at their own game. In 1985, Anti-Fascist Action was formed and continued the fight, confronting the emergent British National Party and its violent henchmen.

Dave Hann and Steve Tilzey were active members of the Squads and AFA, risking arrest, injury and even prison for their beliefs. No Retreat is their extraordinary account of the hidden war that raged for twenty years on Britain's streets.

No Retreat: 1 Dec 2003
Format:Paperback
Having read many 'hoolie' books, I started reading No Retreat with a certain amount of scepticism. This new genre looks to promote and tittilate us with tales of mindless violence where the only winners are the author's 'lads'. No Retreat certainly does not fall into this trap. Whilst it does describe scenes of graphic violence, it puts the behaviour of anti-fascist organisations in a context that, to many people was justifiable in combating fascism on our streets. The style of writing that both authors adopt is exciting and stimulating.

Having limited my reading on this subject to the books written by the far-right, this was a refreshing insight into how two ordinary members of our society took a stand to defend what they passionately believed in.

There's not alot I can add to the reviews already posted except to say that the handful of negative reviews are transparent in their illiteracy and hostility (ie - it's patently obvious the negative comments were written by fascist sympathisers). Alongside works like the superb Morris Beckmann and Vidal Sassoon account of the anti-fascist "43 Group", this book is a fantastic read and a real insight into activities I didn't know much about. In terms of placing militant anti-fascism in context and explaining why the authors believe violence against the extreme right IS not only justifed but sometimes also necessary the book's introduction is worth the asking price in its own right. I don't agree with everything the book says but it's fascinating, well-written, and highly relevant in these times of heightened BNP activity. The paradox is that people who kid themselves fascism isn't a threat can afford to do so because of the actions described by the anti-fascists who wrote this book. Recommended.

A heart-warming first hand account of the far-right getting kicked up and down the streets of the UK. Recommended. Also recommended, in the same vein - Beating the Fascists: The Untold Story of Anti-Fascist Action.
