Product Description

When Christopher Thomas, a curator at San Francisco's Museum of Fine Arts, is murdered and his decaying body is found in an iron maiden in Berlin, his wife Rosemary Thomas is the prime suspect. Long suffering under Christopher's unfaithful ways, Rosemary is tried, convicted and executed. Ten years later, Jon Nunn, the detective who cracked the case, becomes convinced that the wrong person was put to death. Along with financier Tony Olsen, he plans to gather everyone who was there the night Christopher died and finally uncover the truth about what happened that fateful evening. Could it have been the ne'er do well brother Peter Hausen, interested in his sister's trust fund having got through his own; the curatorial assistant Justine Olengard, used and betrayed by Christopher; the artist Belle who turned down his advances only to see her career suffer a setback; or someone else all together? No Rest for the Dead is a thrilling, page-turning accomplishment that only the very best thriller writers could achieve.

First rate mystery 9 Aug 2011

Jon Nunn was the detective whose murder investigation led to the conviction and execution by lethal injection of Rosemary Thomas. Her philandering husband Christopher was a museum curator and he disappeared after a public row with Rosemary. Several weeks later his decayed body was discovered stuffed into an Iron Maiden, a medieval torture device.

Rosemary's traumatic execution is described in the prologue.

Haunted by Rosemary's execution, Jon Nunn's live was destroyed in the next 10 years - his marriage to Sarah fell apart and he turned to drink. With hindsight he had serious doubts about the case. With help from his friend Tony Olsen, who was a bit of a drama junkie, Jon arranged a memorial service to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Rosemary's execution and it brings all the characters together in one place - Stan, Haile, Justine, Tony, Sarah, Belle, Don, even Rosemary's own children.

The story was a collaboration of twenty-six renowned authors, each having a well-established reputation for their own style of writing. I was familiar with the work of many of the contributors but have to admit, I had not previously read the novels of some and will look out for them in the future.

I thoroughly enjoyed the way this story unfolded. The various authors expertly blended the characters and story together demonstrating their prowess as they seamlessly passed the chapters to each other. Three transitional chapters, written by Jonathan Santlofer, helped cement the changeover between authors ensuring the smooth flow of the narrative.

This excellent example of teamwork has produced an absorbing story; additionally, all profits are going to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I thoroughly recommend it as a first rate mystery.

NOTE: The list of contributing authors is - David Baldacci (Introduction); Jeff Abbott; Lori Armstrong; Sandra Brown; Thomas Cook; Jeffery Deaver; Diana Gabaldon; Tess Gerritsen; Andrew F. Gulli; Peter James; J A Jance; Faye Kellerman; Raymond Khoury; John Lescroart; Jeff Lindsay; Gayle Lynds; Philip Margolin; Alexander McCall Smith; Michael Palmer; T Jefferson Parker; Matthew Pearl; Kathy Reichs; Marcus Sakey; Jonathan Santlofer; Lisa Scottoline; R L Stine; and Marcia Talley.

I bought the book mostly out of curiosity, for the concept of the different writers.

The plot is not that much, and if you' ve read enough mysteries, you get all the hints early enough. So, the story is so-and-so.

But the editing is seamless. The different styles are there, each author gives something different, of course, but the story flows so naturally, as if written by one person.

I believe the next one will be a really great story.

A good collection 13 Dec 2011

Format:Paperback
Amazing collection from varied authors still made it a page turner. I enjoyed the stories and loved the wide array of perspectives, the different shades of characters and the unique styles. I love short stories generally; after coming from reading The Usurper and other Stories, and Chekhov's Ward No6. I am looking forward to future collections brought together by such a wide range of talents.
