Fresh off the success of KNEE DEEP IN THE HOOPLA in 1985/86, STARSHIP released NO PROTECTION in 1987. It was a logical step for the band, as they dug deeper into the slick synth pop of the previous effort. The album opens with a corny but catchy number titled BEAT PATROL. This song's accompanying video managed some airplay on MTV but the song never really took off! Next in line was the HUGE #1 hit, NOTHING'S GONNA STOP US NOW! This song was already a hit when this album was released, so obviously it helped to propel the album to platinum status. Sadly, it would be their last million selling album and GRACE SLICK'S last album with Starship. The songs that follow, are a mix of techno type rockers and ballads, with the standout tracks being, IT'S NOT OVER TIL IT'S OVER(another big hit and an ironic title), GIRLS LIKE YOU and WINGS OF A LIE! The album comes across almost sounding like a gospel rock album, especially THE CHILDREN(another standout)! As usual, there is some tasty but restrained guitar playing from CRAIG CHAQUICO, a possible sign that he would be the next to jump ship! Of all the incarnations of the band, this version takes the most heat for digging into more commercial viable material but truthfully they represented the 80's just as well as they did the 60's and 70's, so PAUL and GRACE should get off their high horse and stop blaming MICKEY THOMAS for going in this direction! They coaxed him into the band anyway, at least PAUL did! Well, hence the title NO PROTECTION...from the crazy things that go on in this business and other people's minds! Anyway, the album is worth checking out, if only for the hits!!!
