Book Description

22 Mar 2011
In upstate New York, Brett and Pamela Jameson find the house of their dreams on twenty acres of land. Bucolic and serene, it is the answer to all of their prayers. But their dream soon turns into a nightmare when violent ex-gang member Rory Madden, the property's former owner returns, and will stop at nothing to reclaim the home he lost to foreclosure. Rory unearths the secrets hidden within the Jameson family, and begins to leverage his knowledge to slowly drive wedges between them. When their seventeen year-old daughter Justine falls prey to Rory's advances, she becomes a co-conspirator, setting about a series of increasingly treacherous events that could forever tear the Jameson family apart. A terrifying odyssey into the dark side of the American dream, No One to Hear You Scream captures the fear of the modern middle-class, the alienation of those left out, and the heart-stopping terror at the realization that it can all be taken away in an instant.

Brett and Pamela Jameson were looking for a home in upstate New York. A nice home, with some land, where Brett and Pamela they can live with Brett's seventeen year old daughter, Justine, and her baby, Abigail. Brett and Pamela find the perfect home as the result of a foreclosure. This fulfilment of a dream will become the beginning of a nightmare.

The home's former owner, Rory Madden, lost his home while in jail. Once out of jail, he wants the home back, and seemingly will stop at nothing to achieve this. By finding out secrets about Brett and Pamela, Rory is able to play them off against each other. And his biggest ally becomes Justine, who is extremely vulnerable and very susceptible to Rory's charm.

Will Rory achieve his objective, and at what cost? Will Justine overcome her own demons? And what about Brett and Pamela? Is their version of the American dream worth the price they have to pay?

There's plenty of action in this novel, and there are plenty of dark secrets uncovered and exposed as the novel races towards its conclusion. I enjoyed the energy in this novel, and quickly became caught up in the story: anyone's dreams can become nightmares; anyone's secrets can be exposed. Just ask the Jamesons.
This is Ms Madeleine's second novel, and I have enjoyed them both.

Please note: I was offered, and accepted, a copy of this novel for review purposes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Dream Home Becomes A Nightmare. 8 April 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
In every dream home a heartache.

Seventeen year old Justine is a single parent who is going through major post-natal depression and is, it seems, as batty as a cave full of Guano. She lives with her father, whose business is going down the Swanee, and his wife, who has a dark secret and whose daughter only recently died.

So, the dysfunctional family move out into the countryside, for a fresh start in an idyllic country house, which they happen to get remarkably cheap.

And, of course, if something seems too good to be true then it usually is.

The previous owner of this perfect home is Rory. Rory is a former Irish terrorist turned drug dealer, who we first meet burying the body of as dead stripper in the grounds of the aforementioned dream home. Rory is stitched up by one of his mates and is sent to prison, which is why he loses his house. But, then he gets out of the slammer bent on revenge and getting his house back.

Julia Madeleine has described NO ONE TO HEAR YOU SCREAM as a hybrid of Cape Fear and The Ghosts Of Belfast which should give you a flavor of this scorching hot, gritty and remarkably tense thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Read this one! 11 Oct 2011

Here's an author that I will definitely be returning to! Great story, interesting characters and enough violence to keep me happy.

Madeleine takes you on a trip to a beautiful house in the remote countryside - the most beautiful spot imaginable and in this amazing setting she creates the home to die for (hehe...there's a pun there folks). If you love browsing through House and Home magazine then you'll pretty much have seen the type of house she creates. What more could anyone ask for? Oh yeah...the owner murders his girlfriend and buries her body in the woods at the back and he's built the house on the back of his drugs money. He's one of those Irish guys that (WARNING) women,....don't ever go near because he's got a twinkle in his eye, he can soft soap the pants off you and then he'll garrote you when he's bored and toss your body aside. And he's gorgeous (I was thinking Patrick Dempsey with an Irish accent and a couple of days' stubble.)

Anyway..twists of fortune and all that, Rory Madden (that's the Patrick Dempsey guy) ends up in jail and loses all his money and his house that he loves more than anything in the world gets sold from under his feet and Rory vows to get it back come hell or high water. Pity the family who bought it and my, do they have their own troubles!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great thriller with pace 1 Dec 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love to try new authors and I've picked up quite a few on Twitter and Facebook. If you're looking for something new, from someone new then this is the book for you.

Starting off by building the scene nicely it slowly unravels family life, unearthing things which perhaps may have been best left unearthered, for the family anyway. With flashbacks to the troubles in Northern Ireland we see how the 'villain' of the piece has developed in to the man he is today.

When he loses the home he built himself and sets out to do all he can to get it back a deadly game is set in motion and the novel speeds a long very quickly as events unfold to a conclusion.

I didn't read any comments before I started reading but have done so now and I'm in agreement.

A most enjoyable read and I'll check out more of Julia's work now.

4.0 out of 5 stars Home, sweet home? 8 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am a big fan of thrillers and enjoy discovering new authors, self-published or not. No One to Hear You Scream was an enjoyable read. The story tells of a family's move from the city to the country into what should be their dream home. Unfortunately, the former owner is determined to get it back - at any cost. He wheedles his way into the life of the seventeen-year old single mother, Justine, who has had psychiatric issues and still suffers from paranoia and distrust. As in every good plot, it reaches a nail-biting climax.

My only negative is that this could do with a final edit as, from halfway through, lines of text recurrently break up which is a little irritating when the reader wants to race along with the action! Apart from one or two typos, it is otherwise well-written with believable characterisation.
