Amazon.co.uk Review

The circumstances of Sandy Denny's wild life and her early death in 1978 cemented her image as the English Janis Joplin, a misrepresentation which does scant justice to her musical legacy. Denny was the queen of British rock-folk but the crystal clarity of her voice makes her one of the great English female vocalists of all time and this anthology of her recorded work attests to her ability. Denny fronted two of the folk scene's most widely respected groups, Fotheringay and Fairport Convention, before becoming a solo artist and this two-disk, 34-track collection moves intelligently through her career from the early Fairport days where she first linked with Richard Thompson--whose thoughtful, tasteful guitar playing illuminates many of her finest moments--through to the heavily orchestrated material of albums like Rendezvous. There is one unreleased track, a demo of "Stranger To Himself" recorded at Denny's home in Byfield, that only adds to her legendary status. --Mike Pattenden

Though the single CD compilation ‘Listen listen’ contains an excellent selection from Sandy Denny’s four solo albums, this double album is even more highly recommended, since it also contains classic tracks from her earlier recordings with Fairport Convention and Fotheringay, as well as other one-off projects such as ‘The Bunch’ and ‘Pass of Arms’. A substantial booklet of archive photos, recording credits and an essay further enhances the collection, which extends to over 2.5 hours in length over 34 tracks. Purchasers of this album are likely to be committed enthusiasts for the Island Records folk-rock style pioneered by the likes of Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson and Fairport Convention, and further description of the music is therefore unnecessary. Suffice to say that no-one appreciating Sandy’s work is likely to be disappointed by this compilation. However, the ‘Listen listen’ CD does include three more songs which do not appear on ‘No more sad refrains’ and therefore those seeking more comprehensive coverage of Sandy’s solo work might well consider buying both of these collections of beautifully remastered recordings.

It is now over 20 years since Sandy Denny's tragic death. This is at least the fourth compilation of her work and possibly the best. It has been released, no doubt, to coincide with the release of a biography with the same name. The double CD collection concentrates on her solo career but includes tracks from her time with Fairport Convention and Fotheringay. What is there to say about her? Well she lived life to the full and paved the way for other female singer-songwriters such as Kate Bush. It's hard to criticism the selection of songs but the absence of epic Fairport songs such as Matty Groves is a surprise. If you are already a devotee, then buy for the rare tracks. If you don't know her work, then this is a good place to start.

This is an excellent anthology, that spanning the whole Sandy career (with the exception of Strawbs period). Maybe some of her best tracks is missing (notably Fairport's "Autopsy", "Rising for the Moon", some of BBC Fairport's recording, like ""Reno, Nevada", "You Never Wanted Me", and - why not? - Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore"). But it's impossible put ALL the best of Sandy in merely two cds, and after all, there's some anthology really perfect? Anyway, I highly recommended THIS anthology instead of others to those who search a good compendium Sandy's career: for sure it's the best of them all. Good sounds, excellent booklet and notes.

This is a truly miraculous album, which showcases Sandy Denny's unique voice and rewards repeat listening In particular, the later songs have lost none of their power over time.
