Product Description

Amazon.co.uk

The circumstances of Sandy Denny's wild life and her early death in 1978 cemented her image as the English Janis Joplin, a misrepresentation which does scant justice to her musical legacy. Denny was the queen of British rock-folk but the crystal clarity of her voice makes her one of the great English female vocalists of all time and this anthology of her recorded work attests to her ability. Denny fronted two of the folk scene's most widely respected groups, Fotheringay and Fairport Convention, before becoming a solo artist and this two-disk, 34-track collection moves intelligently through her career from the early Fairport days where she first linked with Richard Thompson--whose thoughtful, tasteful guitar playing illuminates many of her finest moments--through to the heavily orchestrated material of albums like Rendezvous. There is one unreleased track, a demo of "Stranger To Himself" recorded at Denny's home in Byfield, that only adds to her legendary status. --Mike Pattenden

Though the single CD compilation ‘Listen listen’ contains an excellent selection from Sandy Denny’s four solo albums, this double album is even more highly recommended, since it also contains classic tracks from her earlier recordings with Fairport Convention and Fotheringay, as well as other one-off projects such as ‘The Bunch’ and ‘Pass of Arms’. A substantial booklet of archive photos, recording credits and an essay further enhances the collection, which extends to over 2.5 hours in length over 34 tracks. Purchasers of this album are likely to be committed enthusiasts for the Island Records folk-rock style pioneered by the likes of Sandy Denny, Richard Thompson and Fairport Convention, and further description of the music is therefore unnecessary. Suffice to say that no-one appreciating Sandy’s work is likely to be disappointed by this compilation. However, the ‘Listen listen’ CD does include three more songs which do not appear on ‘No more sad refrains’ and therefore those seeking more comprehensive coverage of Sandy’s solo work might well consider buying both of these collections of beautifully remastered recordings.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent anthology 2 Aug 2004
Format:Audio CD
This is an excellent anthology, that spanning the whole Sandy career (with the exception of Strawbs period). Maybe some of her best tracks is missing (notably Fairport's "Autopsy", "Rising for the Moon", some of BBC Fairport's recording, like ""Reno, Nevada", "You Never Wanted Me", and - why not? - Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore"). But it's impossible put ALL the best of Sandy in merely two cds, and after all, there's some anthology really perfect? Anyway, I highly recommended THIS anthology instead of others to those who search a good compendium Sandy's career: for sure it's the best of them all. Good sounds, excellent booklet and notes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Dreamer! 24 Jun 2006
Format:Audio CD
Sandy Denny was one of the great female songwriters of the 1970`s in England - perhaps the greatest. Sadly Sandy died from a fatal fall from her stairs in 1978.

All her records are filled with atmosphere and great songs. It must have been a very hard job to try and cover her recording career on only 2 CD`s. But I really think this collection does it very well.

Even the title of this collection covers the weary mood that always can be felt in Denny`s songs; even in her most up-beat moments.

There are no songs included from her short time with the Strawbs, but beginning with Sandy`s song "Fotheringay" from the 2nd "Fairport Convention" album the songs come chronologically.

"Fotheringay" would later give name to Sandy`s own band, which she formed in 1969 with Pat Donaldson, Gerry Conway, Jerry Donahue and Trevor Lucas, who would later be her husband.

From "Unhalfbricking" comes "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" - one of her most moving songs.

From the classic folk-rock album "Liege and Lief", an album dominated by Sandy`s unique voice, come two great Richard Thompson songs, "Crazy Man Michael" and "Farewell Farewell". Good to see "Farewell Farewell" here, a song which has often been overlooked. The rare outtake "Ballad of Easy Rider" is good and interesting. Personally I think "The Deserter" would have been a nice inclusion. It was the song that turned me on to Sandy`s voice and music.

Sandy left Fairport Convention in 1969 to start her new band "Fotheringay". Their only record is represented here by 4 songs. 3 of Sandy`s own compositions and the traditional "Banks of the Nile".

5.0 out of 5 stars Piercing Purity 27 Jan 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Sandy Denny needs to be rediscovered. Sometimes hailed as the best female singer-songwriter that Britain has ever boasted, she is still woefully neglected. Coming to this marvellous compilation without a background in that much derided genre of folk I was amazed how classical her voice sounds, particularly in the later solo stuff. It is of an almost religious purity, at complete and majestic contrast to the torrid technopop that succeeded it.From the earliest outings with Fairport Convention to the tracks cut before her untimely death there is an originality, almost an honesty that resists classification. This wonderful album constitutes two and a half hours of an undeniably beautiful and wide ranging talent.A shimmering, genuinely art-juddering experience which will hit your solar plexus with an ecstatic force and get you protesting with evangelical zeal about her monstrous lack of posthumous recognition. True artistry in that quintessentially English sense.

It is now over 20 years since Sandy Denny's tragic death. This is at least the fourth compilation of her work and possibly the best. It has been released, no doubt, to coincide with the release of a biography with the same name. The double CD collection concentrates on her solo career but includes tracks from her time with Fairport Convention and Fotheringay. What is there to say about her? Well she lived life to the full and paved the way for other female singer-songwriters such as Kate Bush. It's hard to criticism the selection of songs but the absence of epic Fairport songs such as Matty Groves is a surprise. If you are already a devotee, then buy for the rare tracks. If you don't know her work, then this is a good place to start.
