Before Dick Gaughan decided that hissing and snarling his way through tracks could pass as artistic indignation, he produced a magnificent body of works - notably Handful of Earth, but also True and Bold, Live in Edinburgh, Gaughan and others. He was the one performer I played more than any other during the 1990s and as such occupies a monumental place in my interest in music ... and I'm sure that of many others. Tracks such as 'Now Westlin Winds', 'Jamie Foyers', and others are just incredible. 'No More Forever' was Gaughan's first album and quite outstanding (my outstanding tracks would be 'The Three Healths' and the Napoleonic classic 'The Green Linnet'), but the whole album flows magnificently. Strangely Gaughan seems to be ambivolent about the album as he doesn't (to my knowledge) play many of the tracks live. Unlike later albums it is not overtly political, though folk music by its nature raises social issues and 'The Three Healths' is an exception.
