Riley Gavin is surprised when she is called out at three in the morning to a crime scene - she is a journalist, after all. But when DI Craig Pell shows her the body of a woman lying in a ditch she does look vaguely
familiar. When the woman is identified, it matters more to Riley's friend, ex-military policeman turned investigator Frank Palmer, for Helen Bellamy was a former girlfriend - so for Frank Palmer it's personal.
Investigations into what Helen was working on before her death provide vague results `something a bit more heavy weight' is all that Riley turns up, apart from an interest in Russian oligarchs. Further digging turns up the address of a woman in Hampshire- is she a relation? For Frank his meeting with Mrs Demelzer gives him feelings of regret, and reinforces his desire to catch the killers of Helen Bellamy. They have just one clue - a photograph.
Meanwhile, Riley has a meeting with a Richard Varley, who is interested in her doing an article for East European Trade - they offer an attractive up-front payment, which she can keep whether or not she decides to do the article. I have to say, me, I am always suspect of a free lunch, as there is no such thing, but then I am a suspicious sort of a girl. As Frank pursues Helen's Killer, Riley delves into the background of her subject Al-Bashir's, and turns up some interesting information..
The characters are well drawn, the writing is crisp and the action kept me turning the pages. The sense of menace was strong and frightening, and made me wonder what one would do faced with such vile threats sitting in a London hotel. The strands of the story come together in an explosive and satisfying climax.
Highly recommended.
