My 'but' is the use of the word "bastard" in the modern version as it causes difficulties with the children which means that it really needs to be a precise 'translation' rather than,what seems to be, a fall-back term of abuse. I have no problem with the word as long as it is used in context. We did have some fun looking at how reductive a term of abuse it is compared to the inventiveness of Shakespeare's terms of abuse.

Who knows the plot of Twelfth Night or Comedy of Errors? Who knows the characters of MacBeth or Merchant of Venice (other than directors, actors, and theatre people, or Shakespearian theatre people)? If you need a fast word-for-word "translation" of the plays (which I did) for plot and characters then these No Fear Shakespeare books are great. They kill the beauty of the text, but you have the original text opposite the simplified text so you can read them both at the same time. Once you get the story... it's much easier to read, understand, and use the so called originals. Never use them as they are. The series doesn't include all the plays. Just the "known" ones. But I was doing a project and I wanted to know fast all the stories/plots so I read the whole set (17 I think) and then I could continue with my project... that had nothing to do with Shakespeare. So for people who are specialists in Shakespeare, you will probably go "yech" and I agree. But when you need fast info... they were very helpful.

Book does what it promises

This is a very simple review to write. The book does what it promises. Left hand page is the text of the play, to the right what each character says is given the literary equivalent of subtitles in colloquial english.
For example, a character says about men in a shipwreck: "Not a hair perished. On their sustaining garments not a blemish, but fresher than before."
Confused? Look to the translation on the opposing page: "Nobody was hurt in the slightest. Even their clothes were unstained, and look fresher than before the storm."
Works better than a mere glossary because it puts the meaning of the characters' statements into 21st century English. And Shakespeare is much more enjoyable and comprehensible when you know what is going on.

Shakespeare Is To Be Enjoyed and This Edition Lets You Do It

As has been stated, this format, original text on the left page, modern text on the right, is extremely helpful, the best of both worlds. The beauty and lyricism of the original text and the quick, easy to read and understand modern text on the right...read this editon, saw the play the next night and appreciated it more than ever before. Scholars may not like this format, but to the public and to the casual, but interested reader, this format can't be beaten.

This is a very useful format for anyone reading Shakespeare, even those who are familiar with the text of a particular play. The book does not interpret, but merely presents the dialogue and stage instructions in modern English. An excellent tool for students and teachers alike.
