Book Description

3 Jan 2013

Marie may be 'getting on a bit' but it's certainly not getting her down.

Her family around her and a man who loves her means that life is good - but nothing stays the same for long.

Marie's golden years are filled with as much drama - love, laughter and tears - as ever. Which just goes to show that getting on a bit does not mean giving up - or even growing up.

Product Description

Review

'Ironside continues to mine her seam of silver-haired humour ... This latest rage against the dying of the light will win new fans and delight the old' Daily Mail.

'Funny, often agonisingly sad - and familiar' The Lady.

'Witty and affectionate, wise but never pious, this is a delightfully irreverent look at growing older' The Spectator.

From the Inside Flap

Marie may be 'getting on a bit' but it's certainly not getting her down. Now she has stopped teaching art, she's taken up painting again, and there are many more hours each day to enjoy life. She has her friends. She has Pouncer, her cat, as well as a darling grandson. And she has Archie to share her bed. All this, plus the Daily Rant's screaming headlines to wake her up in the morning. Life's good. But nothing stays the same for long. A roller-coaster of a year beckons - a year that contains love and death, laughter and tears and the bizarre decision to take up temporary residence in a tree. Always funny, often touching, No! I Don't Need Reading Glasses! shows that getting on a bit does not mean giving up or even growing up.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's Me!! 14 Jan 2013

The book is so funny and I recognise so much of myself in it. It is real and has a healthy approach to our twilight years laced with poignism.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes, I do need them to write this. 1 Feb 2013
Format:Paperback
I laughed a lot and cried at the end. The author writes wonderfully about children. It's a moral book---
if you want to be happier in old age stop thinking about yourself, try to be interested in other people
even as you relish their occasional awfulness. A book for all grandparents who deserve a second chance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read 8 May 2013

As this is my age group I thoroughly identified with the 60's life. More please as it is a smashing age and who says the young have all the interest in life.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yes i do need reading glasses!! 12 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Such a good insight into the new " young" oldies. I am that age and can relate to so many of her thoughts. Also the serious aspect of dementia or alzeimers is sensitively dealt with. Much food for thought.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little disappointed! 22 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An easy book to read but rather twee in parts. Being the same age as Marie the main character, I was able to relate and laugh at her descriptions of life when you get older. I expected more from this book it left me somehow unsatisfied. Marie began to really get on my nerves towards the end, she was just to good to be true.

I am 60+ and think her writing is so appealing and akin to what I do and how I feel! It makes me laugh out loud.

5.0 out of 5 stars How true! 27 Mar 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An easy read with many amusing parts. I could sympathise with many of the incidences in her book and agree that life is not all downhill after 60.

Quite entertaining read but I had expected something more factual rather than novel/diary style. Some amusing moments and observations though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ticked the boxes for me
I don't often give 5 stars and I do not fall into the over 60 age bracket. I loved many of the running gags especially the Daily Rant. Found it witty and fresh. Read more

The type of book that you start and nearly send it back then carry on reading and reading to find out what's going to happen next.
I am only half way and still enjoying it. Read more

This book is well worth a read. I recognised myself in so many of the situations (apart from sleeping the night in a tree).
Some tears and lots of laughs and giggles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read, and fun.
This delightful novel was a great quick read as Virginia ( a favourite columnist for me) reflects uncannily my own experiences as a 65 year old with plenty of life left in me! Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Witty and entertaining
This is an unusual book because it centres around the life of a 65year old. Gentle and entertaining especially for those of a certain age.
