Try categorizing Inouk. Listen to the ear-catching intros that nearly every song on here has (the disco threat of No Danger standing out), and you'd think that this band were a Philadelphia-based Embrace or Starsailor. That is, until one of the McMahon brothers open their mouths. Suddenly the sound becomes a lot looser- guitars swathe everything, and what happened to the choruses? The songs lurch from section to section, much like The Coral's first album, but in a more sinister fashion, riding the wave of prolonged vowel enunciation and stoned grooves, while one or both of the brothers lets loose a stream of consciousness lyric that seems to take an eternity to deliver. Much like the odd song on the early Bunnymen albums- think "Crown Of Thorns" with an extra ton of leaden guitars and you're partly there- this is an acquired taste, and more often than not, the songs sink under the weight of their arrangement and lack of obvious hook. There's very little in the way of hooks, sustained riffs or choruses, and the vocals are an acquired taste, but the album is certainly charming, and I defy anyone not to enjoy the closing two minutes of "Victory". --Thom Allott
