Book Description

15 July 2009
Ellen O'Casey, an Irish Catholic immigrant, is struggling to support her ailing mother, her teenage daughter and herself. Washing other people's laundry in the day, and singing in bawdy pubs at night, Ellen is determined to make a better life for her family by saving enough for the passage to New York where the rest of her extended family have already emigrated. But Danny Donovan, a local gangster and the landlord of the pubs where Ellen sings, intends to make her his mistress. A widow in her late 20s, Ellen has refused to let another man in her life, least of all the brutish Danny, whose advances she doggedly resists. But when Ellen catches the eye of the new doctor in town, Robert Munroe, an intense rivalry is formed between the doctor and Danny. For not only are Robert's feelings for Ellen reciprocated, but the ambitious doctor also intends to investigate the appalling living conditions of the local community and Danny's own hand in it. But as Ellen and Robert become closer and aim to bring an end to Danny's reign of terror, their own chance at happiness seems suddenly to be at stake...

More About the Author

I was born into a large, East End family and grew up in the overcrowded streets clustered around the Tower of London. I still live in East London, just five miles from where I was born. I feel that it is that my background that gives my historical East London stories their distinctive authenticity.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cracking read! 6 Aug 2009
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and it was very difficult to put down!

I found the setting and time period so well described, I could picture it all with absolute clarity. I always find that adds so much to a book, and helps you really connect with the characters. I haven't felt so immersed in an era since I read Gallows Thief by Bernhard Cornwell. The characters were beautifully outlined, and you really feel for their varying situations.

The story was engaging and moved along at just the right pace to keep you interested and guessing.

I would heartily recommend this book and I fully intend to read the next one written by this author!

5.0 out of 5 stars A dramatic book 25 Mar 2009
I enjoyed No Cure for Love very much and found the characters well-drawn and well described. The medical setting was also very interesting and informative. The story itself was well-plotted with a satisfactory conclusion. The drama came not only from the interaction between characters set against a backdrop of Victorian London, but also from the divide between the wealthy and the poverty-stricken. I should like to read another of Jean's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant 28 Mar 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
A story to bring tears and laughter, such a great read again by Jean Fullerton. Following this story on with 'Perhaps Tomorrow' and 'A Glimpse of Happiness' was just great. Thank you Jean Fullerton for writing so passionately about the hard times in the mid 19th century. I just love historical novels

5.0 out of 5 stars No cure for me- I'm a fan! 8 July 2011
I was lucky enough to win all 3 of Jeans books and meet Jean and her husband (who assurred me the inspiration for Roberts charactor!) a few months ago. I took all three books on holiday with me to Greece last week and have read them all- I was captivated! I have never read anything in this genre before and had a little scepticism how I would fair. To my shock it was if the stories were written especially for me, having enjoyed a drink by the river in Wapping a few times in the Town of Ramsgate and the Prospect, my imagination ran away with me. It was if I was there, walking the streets of Wapping in the 1800's not on a beach in Greece. That is descriptive, detailed and emotional way in which Jean has written that makes this (and all her books) unmissable.

I havent read a book in over a year, yet I read 182 pages in one day on holiday...

Jean- I hope you read this as I must just mention to you that I am researching my family history and ancestors lived in Rotherhithe and Southwark and were dock workers. Reading your books have given me real feeling and insight into how life and society was during that time. I was gripped.

Thank you for such a wonderful prize! (hoping you are writing more!).

No cure for love captivates you from the first page. You join Helen,, Bridget and Josie in their daily life, living each hardship and happy moment with them, and as soon as Danny Donovan appears, you know they're in for even worse times. You know life isn't going to be a fairy tale for her and when she meets Robert, you can only keep reading, hoping she will manage to get away from all her troubles . The story beautifully unfolds and takes the reader along. Don't miss it.
