Sadly, this is a very poor example of the sort of romantic storytelling Ms Lindsey is actually capable of writing.

The plot is poor to non-existent... totally revolving around lots of very contrived misunderstandings and the heroine's deliberate misinterpretation of the hero's intentions.

Throughout the book - a very long 361 pages, the encounters between the two lead characters are a constant re-hashing of misunderstandings: starting with her telling him she's married when she isn't, then on to his niece being kidnapped; he thought Katey (the female lead) was part of the kidnap plot and, because she openly acknowledges that she is a consummate liar and weaver of fantasies and has been known to lead people astray with her tales, he didn't believe her when she actually told the truth! He eventually apologises and tells her he wants her for his bride, she refuses to accept either the apology or proposal of marriage. She goes on to tell more porkey-pies (lies), that causes more misunderstandings. He offers more apologies, she return with more rebuttals etc. etc. etc. There are also sporadic paragraphs that pop up throughout the book where you suddenly realise that it's not real-time narrative but that the heroine is suddenly narrating fantasy imaginings - very disconcerting!

The heroine, Katey, is described as friendly, cheerful, intelligent and resourceful... and able to make friends wherever she is. But her unbending moralising attitude to the hero, Boyd Anderson, seves only to alienate her to the reader. The hero's lack of assertiveness makes him appear too immature for this sort of book and rather two dimensional... nothing like characters that Lindsey has created in her early romances. Truth be told... I never actually made it right to the end of the book.

I think its time to put the mallorys to bed if this is the best that JL can come up with, its getting very irritating to read about this family which has the most stunningly attractive, spirited, witty, women in london (all of them ) as the wives. All the husbands are devastatingly handsome, tall, strong, reformed rakes who are now devoted to there wives so much it makes you want to gag. The dialogue is so corny it is truly cringe worthy , James's "puppy and puss " makes me want to give him a good slap, despite him being the best pugilist in the whole world! The main characters are weak and the heroine is a whining ninny, the plot so contrived it is a farce. I'm quite happy to suspend belief, and have over the top characters in books after all it is fiction, but this is just too, too much you need to have a story to go with it

when i first started reading this book i thought i was not going to like it,but i carried on reading it and was glad i did.boyd and katey are made for each other but only boyd seems to know this.he put up with a lot from katey what with sea sickness and receiving abloody nose and black eye from tony i would say he really did love her.a great book and i simply must mention james and tony, they really do make me laugh. malory books would not be the same without those two in them.i cannot wait for the younger malory children to grow up and fall in love.

I was really looking forward to this book because I have read all of the Malory books, as well as many other Lindsey books. I had a lot of expectation for this book! I was expecting a romantic, juicy, well-detailed romance & adventure, but in the end it felt rushed and "general". Unfortunately it wasn't nearly as exciting or well written as the other Malory books. It felt as if Lindsey just wanted to get through it. Despite the many pages to the book, the details of the emotions and adventures weren't well-detailed and seemed dull. The friction between Boyd & Katey wasn't well described or set up. I can't help, but compare this book with those of the other Malory books, and I'm so disappointed. When I was midway through finishing this book I really had a random idea that Lindsey had not authored this book. It just didn't read like a proper Lindsey book.

To Quote "Each to their own", I love Johanna Lindsey's books and read them within 2 days of receiving them, though I read any historical romance novels in order to be taken to a different place other than work, bills and kids lol I must admit I did enjoy this one, my imagination kicked in straightaway with images of Katey and Boyd, their interaction I found to be rather amusing but then I have to admit to being a lover of the Malory family and just want to read more about them and all their little quirks.
