Not what you'd expect 17 Sep 2004

I read this book thinking it would be an invaluable guide as to how to go about starting your own business with little or no money. I was wrong. The book is purely based on Terry Allen's personal experiences throughout his life as an entrepreneur, and although he tries to relate such experiences into useful tips, it's really not helpful at all. His experiences are very subjective and one-sided, although they can be entertaining at times. If you're after the solution to your business finance, it's definately not here.

You'll finish this book (you'll find it hard not to) liking Terry Allen immensely and wanting to emulate his success - but you're unlikely to want to share all his experiences!

If you think you might be an entrepreneur - and especially if you already are one - get this book and enjoy the vicarious thrill of wins following defeats, cash in abundence suddenly slipping out of reach - in short the life of an entrepreneur-holic. You'll learn lots, not least the importance of keeping going in the face of daunting odds - with the help of a little creative thinking.

The most important part of being an entrepreneur is your mindset and those knocking the book and its author may not appreciate this point. I read this book when my business was struggling and it gave me great strength and some great ideas.

This book is no different from any of Richard Bransons in that he teaches us by telling his story. Unlike Branson he didn't become a multi-millionaire or at least he didn't keep the millions he made but if you can take on board what he is teaching about attitude and mindset then you will have got something very valuable and something which no MBA or lecturer can ever teach you because they have never been there.

Comments about him missing out details about internet marketing are baffling because this is not a how to manual, it is a how to think and how to pick yourself up when you are knocked down manual.

I personally really enjoyed it and could related to the author. It will certainly help anyone who wants a taste of what life is like as an entrepreneur from somebody who has been there and done that.

I am onto my fourth company by the way so on the same path myself.
