There is no such lake as Bannermere. However, the place it is based on really exists. You can go there and see the most marvellous scenery in Britain.
There is no such town as Winthwaite where Bill,Penny, Susan and Tim go to school. Yet there is a town called Cockermouth in the western Lake District which the author admitted give him the inspiration for some of the school scenes.
Viking treasure is a part of this story and there is a splendid Viking cross that can be found if you know where to look.
Everyone knows about the 'Swallows and Amazons' stories of Arthur Ransome but few realise that there is another children's series which is based in another beautiful part of Cumbria.
These children slowly grow up through each story in the five that make up the series. One of the most important children's writers of the 20th century has now been done justice by this splendid edition with a new introduction by his daughter. This is for all lovers of the Lake District who want to go and see the real places and show them to their children.
I did and they loved it.
