In a relatively short time Jose James has exhibited an ability to adapt to a wide variety of musical styles, evidence (perhaps) of a restless spirit ever seeking new challenges. His discography attests to this, from the early work with Gilles Peterson's 'Brownswood Recordings', 'The Dreamer' (2008) and 'Blackmagic'(2010), to the traditionally Jazz inflected work with Jef Neve (released via the Verve imprint). When not releasing single albums he has featured, as guest vocalist, on a wide variety of recordings, notably with Jazzanova on their 2009 release 'Of All The Things'. This latest release, on the legendary Blue Note label, represents the latest stage in the development of an intriguing artist, representing (in his own words) an acknowledgement that, 'I don't want to be confined to any particular style. I decided I didn't want to be a Jazz singer anymore and that was really freeing', thereby publicly committing to writing 'without boundaries'. The question is, having made such a bold assertion of artistic freedom, does the album reflect James' intentions?

The album opens with 'It's All Over Your Body', a track that emerges slowly over a keenly articulated drum lick and prowling bassline. The vocal is soon joined by trumpet shading that immediately recalls, quite knowingly, the earlier work of D'Angelo. 'Sword & Gun' opens with an insistent clapping that is soon joined by trumpet and percussive elements suggesting work from outside the western musical tradition, possibly influenced by the presence of French-Moroccan songstress Hindi Zahra. The groove is dreamlike, curling and swaying under the hypnotic vocal. As James has stated, this was a track that 'was beyond both of us'.

Beautiful mellow sound, however, occasionally the backing music drowns out his voice( which could be a tad louder).

wow! This man's voice is unreal. I am never disappointed with anything Jose James does. Once again delivers smooth sultry vocals as only he can, complimented by some amazing jazz. Beautiful duets, especially with Emily King on the acoustic version of 'come to my door'.
One of the very few albums that I can honestly say I loved every single track. I will be playing this over and over for a long time to come!!
