Product Description

Product Description

No Beginning No End is the fourth solo studio album from José James, blending modern jazz and hip-hop. Collaborators that include Robert Glasper; R&B singer/songwriter/guitarist Emily King and the 2011 Thelonious Monk International Piano Competition winner Kris Bowers.

BBC Review

It’s probably too easy to label José James a “jazz musician”. Sure, his smoky blend includes the genre’s wafting keys and spacious improvisation, but James’ aesthetic is a bit more supernatural.

Through it, the Minnesota native drifts into mystical terrain with a smouldering glow that’s part hip hop, part dusty soul, and entirely natural.

There’s a sense of calm that permeates James’ music, yet it harbours just enough edge to make waves in an upbeat setting. On his 2010 album, Blackmagic, songs like Made for Love and the title track could work both in a historic jazz spot or a hip hop superclub.

On this new album, James forgoes the electronic excess for a tighter collection of acoustic soul melodies. Here, he isn’t so focused on alternative sounds; instead, James is able to streamline his approach and keep the vitality of his previous work.

While there’s no denying his iridescent voice, the soundtrack enhances the album’s vigour and solidifies its wistful mood. A track like Trouble, with its rising horn fills and light organs, is bolstered by the evocative instrumental.

Conversely, Tomorrow – the album’s sombre closer – is given life through James’ downtrodden pangs of loneliness. The “long winter” he refers to is far more desperate against a backdrop of rising piano chords and depressing strings.

On Come to My Door, James wants to make peace with an estranged love one who leaves to “find something to believe in”.

No Beginning No End is an incredibly intimate portrayal of love lost and found, personal struggle, self-doubt and reassurance. It’s an introspective take on the complexities of romance and its mind-crippling fallout, told from the mature perspective of a fully realised musician.

Sword + Gun, however, plays like a tribal stance against war. It provides a rare change of pace for the album, which ultimately cruises along as the singer hums with clear-headed candour.

What remains is a nocturnal set of refined resonance. There’s no labelling that.

In a relatively short time Jose James has exhibited an ability to adapt to a wide variety of musical styles, evidence (perhaps) of a restless spirit ever seeking new challenges. His discography attests to this, from the early work with Gilles Peterson's 'Brownswood Recordings', 'The Dreamer' (2008) and 'Blackmagic'(2010), to the traditionally Jazz inflected work with Jef Neve (released via the Verve imprint). When not releasing single albums he has featured, as guest vocalist, on a wide variety of recordings, notably with Jazzanova on their 2009 release 'Of All The Things'. This latest release, on the legendary Blue Note label, represents the latest stage in the development of an intriguing artist, representing (in his own words) an acknowledgement that, 'I don't want to be confined to any particular style. I decided I didn't want to be a Jazz singer anymore and that was really freeing', thereby publicly committing to writing 'without boundaries'. The question is, having made such a bold assertion of artistic freedom, does the album reflect James' intentions?

The album opens with 'It's All Over Your Body', a track that emerges slowly over a keenly articulated drum lick and prowling bassline. The vocal is soon joined by trumpet shading that immediately recalls, quite knowingly, the earlier work of D'Angelo. 'Sword & Gun' opens with an insistent clapping that is soon joined by trumpet and percussive elements suggesting work from outside the western musical tradition, possibly influenced by the presence of French-Moroccan songstress Hindi Zahra. The groove is dreamlike, curling and swaying under the hypnotic vocal. As James has stated, this was a track that 'was beyond both of us'.

Beautiful mellow sound, however, occasionally the backing music drowns out his voice( which could be a tad louder).

wow! This man's voice is unreal. I am never disappointed with anything Jose James does. Once again delivers smooth sultry vocals as only he can, complimented by some amazing jazz. Beautiful duets, especially with Emily King on the acoustic version of 'come to my door'.
One of the very few albums that I can honestly say I loved every single track. I will be playing this over and over for a long time to come!!
