Biography

The importance of asking questions has occupied the human mind since time immemorial. Posing questions to friends, figures of authority – even oneself – can lead not only to information, but also enlightenment. Such has been the approach of singer/songwriter Dolores O’Riordan. First bursting upon the music scene as lead singer of The Cranberries (whose debut album was ... Read more in Amazon's Dolores O'Riordan Store

BBC Review

If ever a band demonstrated the disconnection between the rock media and the paying public, it was The Cranberries.

The Irish band sold over 40 million albums worldwide, yet it was difficult to find a decent word written about them across a five-album career. Lead singer Dolores O'Riordan came in for a disproportionate amount of stick for her “cat-sat-mat” approach to lyrics. Although her second solo album, No Baggage, may not gain her any new converts, those who hold her dear will be delighted.

Written amid domestic bliss (she lives in a log cabin with her family in Ontario), and recorded in London, O'Riordan clearly feels relaxed enough to let her feelings pour out. But the album's opening line – “Some mental anguish in my head, wake me up I am not dead” – shows that although she may have found a great deal of personal inner calm, she's still pondering the invisible world.

Skeleton is from the Zombie school and her emoting reaches fever pitch on Lunatic; imagine Erik Satie tinkling the ivories with a deranged singer banging on. Tranquilizer’s “tranquiliser / desensitise her” rhyme can hardly be regarded as great art, though.

However, the album's high points are rather special. It's You reminds the listener why the world fell under O'Riordan’s spell in the first place: an ode to her parents and to her children, it warns against wishing one’s life away and wanting to go back to simpler times. It's a theme which, of course, has been touched on a million times before, but it doesn't stop it being extremely affecting.

With its charging guitars, ringing choruses, and moments of calm, No Baggage is not unlike an album by her old group. However, when it deviates, such as on the Indian-influenced Throw Your Arms Around Me or the Madchester touches of The Journey, it proves that her settled home life and The Cranberries’ ongoing hiatus suits O'Riordan well. --Daryl Easlea

You'll be surprised for how great of this album. It sounds like the new cranberries album to me rather than the new Dolores album. I think this album is better than 'Wake up and smell the coffee' and 'Are you listening ?'. There are no weak tracks on the album, you can listen through it again and again. The last 2 songs 'Lunatic' and 'Tranquilizer' are very great songs.

4.0 out of 5 stars A strong second solo album from Dolores O'Riordan 23 July 2012
Format:Audio CD
2 years after the release of her highly anticipated debut solo album "Are You Listening?, Dolores O'Riordan brings us its follow up "No Baggage". Just like most of the albums released by The Cranberries, this recording is pretty consistent with some very good tracks. I cannot really fault this collection of songs apart from the fact that there are no clear stand out songs, but there are also no poor song choices.

"Switch Off The Moment" is a pleasant but reasonably ordinary Rock song. "Skeleton" is much more infectious and explosive and bears similarities to one of The Cranberries biggest hits "Zombie". "It's You" is an effective and catchy Pop Rock song and "The Journey" is an uplifting mix of Pop, Rock and Folk. "Stupid" is a pleasant enough Pop Rock ballad with a nice melodic chorus. "Be Careful" is another catchy Pop Rock song and "Apple Of My Eye" and "Fly Through" are a few more strong Pop Rock songs. There is some variety on "No Baggage" with "Throw Down Your Arms" which is a much heavier and darker Rock song, and "Lunatic", a melancholic piano led ballad with an appealing and quite manic bridge section. "Tranquilizer" ends the album on a strong note and is an interesting Rock track.

"No Baggage" will certainly not challenge the listener very much as it is pretty standard Dolores O'Riordan/The Cranberries. But this album is a solid Pop Rock album with hints of Irish Folk which is what she does best, so why not stick to a winning formula?

5.0 out of 5 stars Different 2 Mar 2011

Unlike her previous solo album this one is truly devoid of the cranberries. It is much more easier listening than the heaviness and strong sound of the cranberries. Weak in comparison to the cranberries albums is the wrong way to describe it - it is more smooth, feminine and just very different. If your a cranberries fan this may not please you unless you can accept the smoother studio feel. Personally I really enjoyed this album as Dolores O'Riordan is strong with or without the cranberries. Backing down the cranberries drone allows her tremendous vocals to shine clearly. A love it or hate album for sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great chillout album
A brilliant album, if less dark and raw than Are You Listening; Songs like Stay With Me echoed a hurt that appears to be no longer present in her new collection of songs. Read more
