5.0 out of 5 stars The network scanning book no security library can be without, 10 Dec 2008
By David Pybus "piecrust" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
It's long been without argument that nmap, written by Fyodor, is a cut above the rest when it comes to network scanning. It should therefor be a surprise to nobody that Fyodor's book achieves a similarly high standard in explaining the hows, whys and wherefors of using this tool.

The book starts by giving us a solid grounding in the basics before moving onto standard scanning techniques such as discovery and port scanning. Of course being the book that it is this isn't your 10,000ft view of port scanning one IP address with a choice of three flags, the book goes into the detail you would expect with the sort of information that true afficianadoes lust after.

The book goes on to cover in detail a variety of other topics such as optimisation, service scanning, OS detection, the nmap scripting engine and a bunch of other similarly useful stuff.

In the same way that nmap has always been the answer for port scanning this book is most definitely the answer for your questions on how to get the most out of it. The book is easy and fun to read with great examples along the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Guide, 5 Dec 2008
This book has been a long time in the writing and it shows in the quality and scope.

From a few pages of code in The Art of Port Scanning, Phrack Magazine in 1997 to Hollywood mainstream in 2003, Nmap became a sub-cultural icon, movie shorthand for hackers and hacking, as well as one of the most widely used security tools. Well, in Nmap Network Scanning, its creator just wrote its biography, and it's very revealing.

This isn't just another "how to use" book, although that is all in there, both in case studies and in a 42-page reference guide. This is the most revealing technical book I've ever read about a security tool. Fyodor turns Nmap inside out to explain what it does, how it does it and why it was written that way. If you are looking for a definitive book on Nmap, this is it.

Anyone fortunate enough to have got hold of one of the pre-release copies at Black Hat or Defcon will not have been disappointed.

There is a wealth of other material on the associated website, including sample chapters for those who want a better idea of the content.

It's perfect for both learners and skillful portscanners, written in a nice understandable language and with really good examples and stories to show the many functionalities of Nmap.
