Product Description

Product Description
Eleven year-old Nick Vargas thinks his sucky life is being turned upside down. His father has just remarried and moved his new wife and her daughter into his home in the soon-to-be-completed, Mangrove Hollow. And now, not only has Nick lost his bedroom to his wacky new step-sister Laurie (who lugs around this huge book about faeries) - if that wasn't bad enough - Nick's father actually wants him to spend time with her! So when an "expedition" to a nearby lake turns up a nixie with a giant problem - and by giant, we mean the enormous, fire-breathing kind - it's up to Nick and Laurie (with the help of Nick's older brother and a very familiar face from the original Spiderwick Chronicles) to come up with a plan. Will they be able to stop the rampaging beast before all of Mangrove Hollow goes up in smoke?

About the Author
Holly Black spent her early years in a decaying Victorian mansion where her mother fed her a steady diet of ghost stories and faerie tales. An avid collector of rare folklore volumes, spooky dolls, and crazy hats, she lives in West Long Branch, New Jersey, with her husband, Theo. Together with illustrator Tony DiTerlizzi, she is the creator of the bestselling Spiderwick Chronicles series of children's books. For more information, visit www.blackholly.com. Mary Botham Howitt was born in 1799 in Coleford, England. Originally published in 1829, Mary's best-known work 'The Spider and the Fly' has been enjoyed by generations of readers and has become an age old classical cautionary tale. Mary Howitt died in Rome in 1888. Tony DiTerlizzi's unique and unusal artstyle is the perfect complement to Howitt's classic tale. He lives with his wife in Brooklyn, New York.

3.0 out of 5 stars Spiderwick is back- new characters, faeries and a new series, 3 Jul 2008

This is the first book in the 'Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles series. The 162 paged rollacoaster is jam-packed with adventures and danger.

The story begins when a boy named Nick has to put up with a new stepsister called Laurie. She introduces him to the world of faeries, and soon Nick discovers a nixie. The nixie needs help to find her sisters and while Nick and Laurie look for them, they discover a giant which could easily destroy them, the nixie, their family and their house. To stop the perilous situation the pair find themselves in, an old friend is called upon...

This book was good if you enjoy fantasy and thrillers but for slightly older readers(12+)it could be a bit of a disappointment as it is reasonably short and the story itself is not really substantial enough to get into properly.

I recommend this book for anyone aged 8 or over.

SR :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Faerie heat, 7 Oct 2007

If you're a fan of Spiderwick
You'll love "The Nixie's Song"
For boys and girls of eight & up
(It isn't very long)

A Nixie needs a little help
She's high and dry on land
Nick and Laurie do their best
But get more than they planned

The faerie down in Florida
Are turning up the heat
A giant's woken in a rage
And now he's on his feet

There's just one thing to calm him down
Or slow him up at least
And that's the thing that's always used
To sooth a savage beast

The children have to find a way
To save the State from burning
Their only hope's a character
From Spiderwick returning

The ending is a bit abrupt
There's more to come, I know
This one may get your boys to read
And leave the Nintendo
