Hard to beat as a soundtrack for summer, 25 Sep 2002
These two men have an incredibly deep production catalog, their blend of funky, dubbed out Latino vibes landing on more DJ mixes than and other house hit-makers I can think of. Except perhaps some of their fellow-minded partners and mates Hipp-e & Halo (H-Foundation) Dano, DJ Chus, and such. With a string of singles releases on label NRK, the duo's turn came up for the next installment of the Nite Life series, one of the best house series running today. Joeski drops some seriously deep grooves, grabbing from the get-go with the deep bass and live flute of Black Box Technology "Caterpillar." Some sexy pieces work in, with S.W.'s techy "Move it" sneaking in a menacing b-line partway through, and his own collaboration "Te Quiero" topping that. Deft overlapping ties it all together, while inspired beat fests such as "The First Tribal Feeling" and "African Jive" sustain the energy. Only complaint? Metal Dogs "All Rise" plods along. Onionz set counterpoints both his partner's and his earlier 2001 release Future Acoustics, laying soulful, sexy vocals over Latino-tribal beats. Occasionally full-throated (Taka Boom "Taka's Groove") he still maintains a fine balance between sticky-sweet and garage-powered singers. Most of all, his hour has that sense of disco wonder, the wonderful feeling when just the right vocal anthem drops. Pete Moss's "R U Serious" has it in spades, Kick Affiliates "Don't Wanna Stop" does too, a great singer with exquisite backing that would make one serious dub. Intricate back to the roots drum programming on "Tengo Sed" and a heavy Latin close-out ("Agole") neatly close it all out. Bottom line, house fans should get this immediately; it'll be hard to beat as the soundtrack for summer. If you like this, try: H-Foundation "Nite Life v2", DJ Onionz "Future Acoustics" Murray Richardson "House of Ill-Repute"

One great mix, one good mix, 26 Aug 2006
Onionz mix is the one to listen to here. Starts off with the jazzy little number "My Flow", then drops into "Taka's Groove" Blakdoctor mix, brilliant tune IMO. Long, swooping synth, scuttling hi-hat and sumptous female vocal, I love this tune. My Father's Farda, being a particular favourite drops soon afterwards, following a key-change in the mix. Always love Tengo Sed, great percussion and picks you up with Tropicasa. Ends with the Hazmat tune and Deeper, brilliant tracks both very, very deep house.
Basically if you like these guys production style, West Coast feel, and also appreciate class house then get this. I have had the CD for about 3 years and own 100's of mix CD's but this album, specifically the Onionz mix is one I keep coming back to time and time again. I first heard it in Amsterdam whilst in a friends house after a night out on the shrooms and with a reefer in hand, needless to say I always connect this mix with good times.
Joeski mix is ok. Not of the same quality as the Onionz effort but worth a listen, it's average in comparison to Onionz outstanding effort.
