I love Soulwax and am enjoying following them as they continue to mutate and try and cross-pollinate their riffy rocky stuff with their clubby tastes.
But although this worked well on the album Any Minute Now here it is a bit more hit and miss. The fun/problem with Soulwax when they go electronic is figuring out where they are coming from. Are the often quite simple/basic sounds they use the result of diving deep into electronica, getting bored of a lot of it and therefore deciding on something chunky and simple? Or is it just that they haven't got very far in the first place?
Listening to some of the music they mix in their 2manydjs guise you would assume the former. But looking at the music they have created themselves up till now maybe you would tend to the latter. And it does matter. Because guitar bands trying to do electronic stuff often sounds exactly like that - the wrong people in the wrong medium. The result is often tedious to listen to. Too much of this remix album strays into that territory.
But where they get it right there is some really interesting stuff. The tracks I would highlight are Slowdance, I love Techno and Krack. These keep the spirit of the original songs but give them a good electronic work over. Also the LCD remix of NY Excuse is class.
Worth a punt if you're a fan, and worth getting hold of the best tracks if you're not.
‘Nite Versions’ is a masterful compilation of their characteristic electro-techno sounds boiled up with some proper good electric guitar and some seriously phat bass lines. Like a cross between Tiga and Duran Duran, these tracks harness some momentously deep galvanisation of the dance variety. Twisting through palisades of the dance music genres, this compilation is a representation of all things we love about Soulwax and more.‘Nite Versions’ reads like a juicy novel, from the re-blended version of Daft Punks ‘Teachers’ to the reminiscent cut of their house smash NY Excuse caressing its way through NY Lipps then gently coaxing its way through the final track, ‘Another Excuse’.
For all the house and breaks, electro, and techno fans out there (and everyone else besides) i seriously recommend this album!
