Great entertainment,

This review is from: Nip/Tuck - Series 1 (Box Set) [DVD] [2004] (DVD)
It's hard to sum up concisely what this show is mainly about as there is so much going on from family relationships, to the dynamics of starting a fledgling business with your best friend, to making a lot of bad decisions and getting involved with the type of people you wouldn't want to meet on a dark alley at night.
The characters are likeable, which considering some of their actions is no easy matter. There are the two main characters of Christian, the absolute womaniser who sleeps with women without even getting a full name and then just as easily discards them all together from his life. Along with his best friend and much more respectable plastic surgeon partner Sean, who is a married family man with a life that hasn't made him happy in a long time. Sean's wife Julia, also plays a big part as she struggles with her role in their marriage and has deep seeded regrets about how her life could have turned out differently if she hadn't started a family with Sean so early. There are also a whole host of more minor characters that are great, Sean's son Matt who after his father denies him surgery tries to take matter in his own hands. Liz the anaesthetist who struggles with the morals of the career she works in and often vocally disapproves of Sean and Christians more money grubbing business solutions. All the characters from the more central ones to the minor roles are played brilliantly and they are an interesting bunch to say the very least. Sean and Christian are in the business of transforming people's lives through surgical means, however, the consequences of some of their less moralistic and more money grubby ways often lead them into a whole seedy world of drugs and murder. This is a great programme as it takes a look at what people don't like about themselves but also the underlying problems some people might have because of this or due to this. Most of the episodes begin with new clients coming into the office and being asked...'so what do you not like about yourself?' Personally I really like this type of consistency and it often re-centres the programme back to the plastic surgery. There are thirteen episodes in season 1 and all of them were really good. To my memory I don't once remember sitting there and thinking that I was watching a filler episode. In fact there is so much going on that each episode is a whirl wind of activity. Each episode is around 40 minutes long and I can watch an entire disc in one sitting, which is high praise from me as I don't usually have much attention for TV. I doubt it is for everyone as there are some graphic scenes of cosmetic medical procedures and a few sex scenes, so this is definitely one for the grownups. This is also a great programme because it is something that both my husband and I have enjoyed watching, unlike some other shows that maybe leans towards one gender group this is something we both have had entertainment from.

Trashy American TV - I love it!,

This review is from: Nip/Tuck - Series 1 (Box Set) [DVD] [2004] (DVD)
After cotemplating what box set we should start watching next, my other half and I took a risk and picked up Nick / Tuck - and boy am I glad we did! From the first episode we were hooked and wanted more! Even my boyfriend, who can be quite choosy, was smiling by the end of the first episode. I love each and every character and credit to the actors for playing it so well! There is real drama, heart wrenching storylines, laugh out loud moments, plenty of sex and the surgical scenes have the "oh my god how real do they look' factor! For people giving this series negative comments because of too much sex / scenes too grotesque / trash television - that is exactly what makes it so good! If you don't like it, go back to watching ER or Casualty! We're nearly half way through Season 2 - and Season 3 is waiting for us in the cupboard!

Powerful, heartwrenching, emotional, at times hilarious, and not at all tacky. Everything a quality drama should be. I was blown away by the characters and the stories in this first season. A must see, absolutely first class in every way.
