Review
"Bell's debut novel effectively fuses theological fantasy with psychological mystery to create a gripping narrative." (Eric Brown THE GUARDIAN )

"A haunting, engrossing story with a unique aura of its own. Alex Bell's remarkable debut is original, cleverly plotted and so well written the pages just flew by." (Raymond Khoury )

"Accomplished stuff." (SCI FI NOW )

"...highly engaging... Bell skillfully conveys the panic and paranoia Gabriel experiences as he descends into a nightmare world of revelation. Bell successfully taps into the rich vein of deep-seated biblical superstition that is so compelling in works like The Omen or even The Da Vinci Code." (John Berlyne SF REVU )

"I found this to be a rather enjoyable novel - pacey, easy to read, and interesting enough to keep me turning the pages. I'll be very interested to see where author Bell goes from here." (HORRORSCOPE )

"...powerful and bizarre British debut with supernatural overtones and a genuine quirky voice. Worth investigating." (MURDER ONE )

"This is a very readable debut novel... it will be worth keeping an eye on Bell." (Tony Chester CONCATENATION )

"It's well enough done as a thriller, and the conclusion sets us up perfectly for a long-running series. [An] assured debut." (Andrew McKie THE TELEGRAPH )

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than the Da Vinci Code?, 17 Jun 2008
Well, the list of ingredients on an HP Sauce bottle are better written than the Da Vinci Code and more exciting too!

I don't know why two people had to drag the comparison in with this book - it's nothing like Dan Brown's grossly overrated novel. It has a high degree of the supernatural but whilst its basic plot had some great possibilities the ending didn't live up to these and it sort of fizzled out.

Well written but ultimately unsatisfying, it stands head and shoulders over the Code and then some!

1.0 out of 5 stars Utter Pants, 5 Feb 2009
By G. Crone "gacman" (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I don't usually submit book reviews, but having seen the number of 5 star reviews for this drivel I felt compelled to warn readers of the direness of this book.
Firstly, I understand why so many reviewers felt the need to make comparisons to Dan Brown; neither he nor Alex Bell seem capable of writing in a style that would seem convincing to anyone over the age of 15 (and I am probably doing a disservice to many under 15s). JK Rowling has a far more sophisticated style than Bell.
I bought this book after being intrigued by the concept of the story. I was at first concerned by the style of the first person narrative, but thought I would stick with it as it was perhaps the author's way of showing the disorientation of the amnesiac protagonist. I then decided that it was meant to be ironic, but as the book progressed there was no sign of irony whatsoever. I came to the disappointed conclusion that it was just badly written.
I soldiered on hoping to be impressed by an interesting revelation at the book's conclusion, only to end up laughing in disbelief. There was nothing at all to link the personality of the pre and post-amnesiac Gabriel or to explain his medieval concepts of angels/demons. There was also no explanation of his vast scholarly knowledge of theology etc.
In short, a badly written book with some intriguing mysteries which are completely spoiled by an unconvincing ending.
