Product Description Review

All of your favourite Nintendo characters have come together to answer the question: who is king of the Nintendo hill? The format can aptly be described as Super Mario Kart meets Mortal Kombat, which makes for an odd, yet addictive game. The object is to throw, punch, smash or blast your opponents off the edge of the beautifully rendered, themed arenas. Numerous power-ups, weapons and surprises help or hinder the melee. Your eventual goal is to fight your way through to a bizarre final boss character. Victory in this battle rewards you with another character to play, such as the scene-stealing Pokemon, Jigglypuff.

From Star Fox's laser pistol to Link's hook shot, each character's trademark special abilities are utilised to knock one another off the screen. The game does a great job balancing the characters' widely differing powers so that no one character has an insurmountable advantage. The sound and animations are also dead-on: Donkey Kong is a huge, cartoonish ape, while Link is much more detailed and realistic. And Pikachu's famous thunder shock attack is accompanied by a fearsome yell of "PIKA!"

Unlike most fighting games, Super Smash Bros. allows you to team up with a computer partner and take on other teams in both single and multiplayer modes. But the most fun is had when four human players play in a battle royale. The game quickly becomes a scene of incredibly fun chaos: picture Mario beating up on Luigi, while Donkey Kong is chased by a scampering, sledgehammer-wielding Pikachu. It's the perfect party game. --Hugh Arnold

  • Great characters: Mario, Luigi, Pikachu, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Link, Star Fox, Yoshi and more
  • Simple gameplay
  • Computer partner option
  • Colourful arenas
  • Limited number of arenas

5.0 out of 5 stars Super smash bros.(the best!) 21 Oct 2000
By A Customer
This is just perfect for 4 player scraps! The characters are a select group of good li'l nintendoids and the arenas have pros and cons instead of a flat, dull area.If you love beat 'em ups, you will go gaga for this! Fighters:Mario,DK,Link,Samus(from Metroid),Yoshi,Kirby,Pikachu(YIPPEEEEEE!)and Fox.There are also 4 hidden scrappers:Jigglypuff,Cap'n Falcon,Ness(From some ol' fogie game, Earthbound, on the SNES)and Luigi. Arenas:There are arenas for every (normal, not hidden)character(exept Mario 'cause he gets two!) Conclusion:BUY THIS GAME! YOU WILL NEVER REGRET IT!

5.0 out of 5 stars An N64 classic. 20 May 2005
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I borrowed this off a friend years ago and I liked it so much that I've bought it now.

If you're reading this with interest after playing the GC game then you'll be instantly at home with the game. Otherwise, this is the basic game structure:

You start with a 0%, no health bar or anything. You attack the other players (up to 4 simultaneously) using kicks, punches, throws or items and as they are hurt the percentage rises. The higher the percent the further they fly. If you can get them to fly out of the arena you get a point and they beam back into the arena. Repeat until time is over! You can set options such as lives, teams.. but it plays in the same style.

This is how the game is on single and multiplayer, but on single there are bosses and bonus levels. The bonus levels are good- each character has 2 of their own, break all the targets and land on the platforms. You have to use all your characters individual abilities to do this and it's really surprisingly fun.

Going back to it show's how much the GC game improved it- it basically improves every area, there isn't really much the N64 game does better. That's not putting this game down, but after the GC game you'll notice that in this one you can't air dodge, and the general game feels just a bit less elegant.

The graphics are good, a bit angular, but really you cant ask for more when it moves so fluidly.

The music is another high point, classic themes from the various games are here and it's nice to hear them again.

It doesn't have the epic single player that the GC game has, but it is fun, and also just playing the normal vs games with CPU is fun as it can be adjusted to your taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars A pleasant surprise 9 Aug 2000
By x_freak
I was unsure about this game at first. It sounded a nice idea, a bunch of nintendo's best characters into a beat em up, but the idea of having to knock your oponent out of the ring instead of just beating them to a pulp sounded like it would ruin the game. Fortunately, it brought a new edge to the game, creating a lasting beat em up whichc you would want to return too. Its has 4 extra characters, Ness, (a character from an old RPG from the snes) Captain Falcon (from f-zero/F-zero X), Luigi (Mario's brother as if you didn't know) and Jigglypuff (a pokemon) the question is though, why Jigglypuff? Or even Ness for that matter? Most would of liked to have seen bowser in there or Diddy Kong, not an unknown and yet another annoying pokemon! Yes, Pokemon are fun, but if I wanted to see them, I'd look to a pokemon game and would not expect to find two of them in a beat em up! Yes, Pikachu can be forgiven, he needs to be there, he is one of there main characters and everyone in the world has heard of him, but not the same as Jigglypuff, who only Pokemon fans would know! But this (fortunately) doesn't ruin the game, infact for some, it gives them more incentive to beat them to apulp creating even more lastability. The 4 player mode works a treat much to many a persons surprise and is great luaugh with the accasional confusion when the screen zoms out. Nintendo deliver a fantastic game....This game deserves its five stars! Well done nintendo!
Pros: Great game play Nintedo Characters! (yipee!) Interesting extras with the items (Pokeballs, Light "swords", baseball bat etc, etc) Will last for ages! Extra characters....
...but not enough of them! Too much pokemon!

By R Lewis
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
This game will remain forever in my heart.
Great multiplayer game, and in some respects, single player; all the unlocking things and what not kept me busy for a while!

In conclusion, an amazing game.
