The New Nintendo 3DS XL console.

Nintendo 3DS XL

Enjoy all your favourite 3DS games on the big screen with the new Nintendo 3DS XL console. The Nintendo 3DS XL's screen is 90% larger than the Nintendo 3DS, making it the biggest screen on any Nintendo handheld console. With so many great games available, you be pleased to know the Nintendo 3DS XL boasts a better battery life so you can play for even longer.

Features and Benefits

•  Rediscover your games with the larger screen - soar through even more epic landscapes in Kid Icarus: Uprising, or prepare for bigger frights in Resident Evil: Revelations.

•  Improved 3D and sweet spot to bring game worlds, enemies and heroes to life.

•  Longer battery life for longer exploration, racing multiplayer battling, and online gaming.

90% Bigger: The Nintendo 3DS XL
compared with the Nintendo 3DS

The Bigger Screen

Measuring at 4.88 inches, the Nintendo 3DS XL's 3D screen is the biggest screen ever featured on a Nintendo handheld console. 90% larger than the screens found on the Nintendo 3DS system, users will be amazed as the large screen delivers amazing 3D graphics without the use of glasses.

Perfect for revisiting old favourites or starting new adventures, Nintendo fans can expect a more engrossing experience in all their games. Fans of the Art Academy series will benefit especially; by taking advantage of the larger screens to make more precise brush strokes, players can get the feel of painting on a real canvas and take pride in displaying their works at the largest possible dimensions.

The Most Immersive 3D

The largest ever screen, enhances the impression of depth and creates the most immersive 3D experience possible. Players will see the Mushroom Kingdom brought to life on the 3DS XL and discover the beauty of Super Mario 3D Land as never before. No detail will be missed when players join Mario as he explores the brilliantly designed levels in his latest adventure to save Peach from Bowser.

Better Battery Life

Despite the increase in screen size, the Nintendo 3DS XL console boasts a better battery life than the Nintendo 3DS. The Nintendo 3DS XL has an impressive battery life of up to 6.5 hours when running 3DS software and up to 10 hours with DS software.

Gamers will be able to take their Nintendo 3DS XL console on the move, safe in the knowledge that it won't run out of valuable playing power. This means that avid Kid Icarus: Uprising players can engage in longer multiplayer battles - and more of them.

The AC adapter is not included with the console, but the Nintendo 3DS XL is compatible with all previous 3DS, DSi and DSi XL power cables.

Transfer Your Data

Take Miis everywhere and quickly transfer Miis and game data between devices. Using a WiFi connection, users can take advantage of the Wii's Mii Channel and the 3DS XL's Mii Maker to send Miis directly from one console to another.

Keep all game and StreetPass data as well as photos and Ambassador status when upgrading. By connecting the 3DS XL and a DSi or 3DS to the internet, the 3DS XL's System Transfer functionality can be used to easily move some or all data to the new console.

Enjoy the same great 3DS features now on a bigger screen thanks to the Nintendo 3DS XL

3D Screen

Like previous handhelds released by Nintendo, the Nintendo 3DS XL incorporates both an upper and lower LCD display in a clamshell layout. The lower screen features familiar Nintendo touchscreen technology, is 4.18" with 320 x 240 pixel resolution and is capable of displaying 16.77 million colors, but the groundbreaking upper 3D screen of the Nintendo 3DS XL system is where Nintendo opens up a whole new world of eye-popping gameplay possibilities. This 4.88" display is capable of displaying approximately the same 16.77 million colors, but with 800 x 240 pixel resolution. 400 pixels are allocated to each eye to enable 3D viewing. This stereoscopic 3D display gives objects within the gameworld a feeling of space and depth that extends far into the back of the screen. This amazing depth of field effect vastly increases the ability to see the position of characters and obstacles in compatible game, making many game experiences even more intuitive for all types of players.

3D Depth Slider

A built-in 3D Depth Slider along the right side of the top display allows you to immediately adjust the intensity of the 3D settings on the Nintendo 3DS XL system to your liking. The 3D effect can also be turned down completely if the player so chooses. All Nintendo 3DS XL games and applications can be played in 2D, and look better when played on the Nintendo 3DS XL than any Nintendo handheld before it.

Motion Sensor and Gyro Sensor

Portable play control reaches a new level with the Nintendo 3DS XL's Motion Sensor and Gyro Sensor combination. Together these precision built-in features allow for new and unique gameplay mechanics as the 3DS XL reacts to real-time motion and tilt. Whether players are twisting their systems side to side, or moving it up and down, their motion-compatible Nintendo 3DS XL games respond instantly.

Circle Pad Analogue Control

With the Circle Pad, located above the + Control Pad, Nintendo 3DS XL offers full analogue control in 3D game worlds. Combined with the touch screen, traditional buttons, camera and microphone input, and advanced motion control of the Motion Sensor and Gyro Sensor, the potential is extraordinary.

3D Camera Functionality

Along with a digital camera facing inwards towards the player, the Nintendo 3DS XL system features two outer cameras positioned along its upper edge when device is open. These two cameras see the world in 3D, much like the human eye, allowing for the creation of 3D photos - and a similar 3D effect to that seen in Nintendo 3DS games. All cameras feature 640 x 480 resolutions with single focus lenses that use the CMOS capture element and an active pixel count is approximately 300,000 pixels.

Adjustable Stylus

The adjustable Nintendo 3DS Stylus takes the idea of touch control to a new and even more user-friendly level. Once removed from the holder, the stylus length can be adjusted to your liking with a simple push or pull. Now anyone can achieve the optimum level of comfort while playing games that use the stylus.

Other Key Features

StreetPass

Nintendo 3DS XL brings fellow players together in exciting new ways with StreetPass communication. Set your Nintendo 3DS XL to Sleep Mode and carry it with you wherever you go to exchange game data like Mii characters, high scores, and custom characters with other users you pass on the street. You control what data you exchange and you can exchange data for multiple games at once, making virtual connections with real world people you encounter in your daily life.

SpotPass

Nintendo 3DS includes SpotPass, a feature that lets Nintendo 3DS detect wireless hotspots or wireless LAN access points and obtain information, game data, free software, videos and so on for players even when the system is in sleep mode.

4 GB SD Memory Card Included

Every Nintendo 3DS XL system comes packed with a 4 GB SD memory card. You can use this SD memory card to store your 3D photos, and sound recordings created on the Nintendo 3DS system, and music from your PC. You can also use it to store games downloaded from the Nintendo eShop. The Nintendo 3DS system has SDHC card compatibility to increase your storage space even further.

Backwards Compatibility

Almost all existing Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi games can be played on a Nintendo 3DS system in 2D. With backwards compatibility, your existing portable games look and play just as well.

Wireless Communications

Nintendo 3DS utilises a frequency of 2.4 GHz, enabling local wireless communication among multiple Nintendo 3DS systems for game play and StreetPass, as well as access to the Internet through wireless LAN access points (supports IEEE802.11 b/g with the WPA/WPA2 security feature). Recommended distance of wireless communication is within 98.4 feet. This can be shorter depending on the environmental situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcomed upgrade. 28 July 2012
By Sukh
Edition:Silver/Black Standard Edition
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
At first I was undecided about purchasing the 3DS XL as I already had the Aqua blue 3DS and was reasonably happy with it. However I played Mario Land 3D in a Game retail store and was suprised how clear and nice the screens were.

The main reasons I prefer the 3DS XL are:

1) The Silver 3DS XL comes in a matt finish which is less prone to finger prints and smudging.
2) The lower screen was way too small on the original 3DS and found both larger screens are so much better on XL.
3) The battery now lasts 6 hours (original lasted 3 - 4 hours) which means less charging.
4) The buttons and analog stick are spread out more and feel a lot less cramped.
5) The 3D affect is much more clearer on the larger screens and even if you look at the 3DS XL at an angle it does not pose a problem.

The upscale to the big screen is great and very clear. I completed games like Mario Land 3D and Mario Kart 7 a while ago but on the new system they feel fresh and new again. I have started playing them and having so much fun the second time around.

If you own games like Street Fighter 4, Tekken 3D and Dead or Alive Dimensions then this new system is a must as the fight sequences and finishing moves are so much more satisfying on the larger screens. I found it easier to pull off the touch screen combos on the lower screen now as, I can touch the combos I want on Dead or Alive. I now play games like Mario with the 3D turned on. I use to find the 3D really annoying on the 3DS but on the 3DS XL the 3D is actually OK and I have no problem keeping it on for most games (on a low level) without any bother.

I have started watching videos on the Eurosport and Nintendo Video apps because of the screen sizes. I did not enjoy watching clips on the original 3DS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Innovative fun 22 Oct 2012
Edition:Silver/Black Standard Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The 3DS XL carries on the innovative 2 screen fun of all prevous incarnations of the DS that preceded it, but this time it's in 3D....and, crucially, in the case of the XL it has a MUCH larger screen which causes less strain on the eyes. The 3D is very good and there is a slider to adjust intensity or turn off entirely. This neat feature adds extra depth to games and i find it particularly useful for platform games for judging distance for jumps, etc. The 3D can cause sore eyes and mild headaches when used for excessive periods, but not really a big issue with me, the unit and the games Nintendo provide are just so much fun! Highly recommeded for kids of all ages

4.0 out of 5 stars What the 3ds should have been launched as? 31 July 2012
Edition:Silver/Black Standard Edition
The XL is aesthetically and ergonomically much more pleasing than the 3ds. It gives a more professional look and the bigger screen creates more immersion in games, especially in cut scenes as it feels more like a cinema experience compared to the 3ds. Holding it feels more comfortable and smoother than the original model. Whilst I do believe it is technically exactly the same as the 3ds, bar the battery life and screen improvements, the handheld feels much more polished than the crude and somewhat ugly 3ds- which I traded for this one. Contrary to popular belief, the 3d sweet spot hasn't, in my opinion, been improved, but the bigger screens may make it seem that way. Watching the 3D videos on the bigger screen is much more pleasing, and whilst there is slight pixel stretching (not the technical term, possibly not even a term!), the whole handheld just looks like something you want to take care of more than the robust original. Obviously games make the handheld and there is a virtual smorgasbord of titles to buy- I purchased the excellent Kingdom Hearts to go with the system.

However the reason for only giving it four stars is that overall, it still doesn't quite reach perfection in my opinion. The issue of the extra slide pad taints the 3ds (rightly or wrongly), and whilst it would of course fractionate the market to include it on the XL, it should have originally been included on a system that would include games like Monster Hunter, Resident Evil and Metal Gear Solid. I know these can be played without it, but it seems a poor design choice in hindsight. The internet should be better as well- It is such a slow browser on the 3ds that it makes surfing a frustrating experience.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not quite there yet. (yellow screen) 1 Aug 2012
By D.S
Edition:Silver/Black Standard Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 3.0 out of 5 stars
This a good alternative to the original 3DS, much more comfortable to hold and the larger screen size is great. Also I like that the stylus is now kept on the right side of the unit rather than the top. Just for these reasons alone it initially seems like a worthwhile upgrade to the original 3DS, but it has some noticeable issues: speaker's are terrible (using headphones is a must), build quality of the unit feels plasticky and much cheaper than the original, top screen has a yellow tint (very warm lcd) when displaying anything white, contrasting against the bottom screen (cool lcd) which displays white as white as it should do. This makes for an awful combination, especially in games and applications that span across both screens with white. Perhaps I am more unlucky than others as I know all LCD's screens will vary, but the top screen yellow tint is too much for me (max brightness, power saving mode off). It's worsened in 2d mode, more tolerable in 3D mode.

The hinge seems sturdier on the 3DS XL, and snaps into position solidly. I'm unsure why Nintendo have included the first notch/position on the hinge though as surely nobody would play like that. And this means most users have to crunch past that notch very time they open the 3DS XL. 3D viewing angle seems the same as the original 3DS. L and R triggers feel sturdier and improved. No power supply in the box is inexcusable given the expensive UK launch price, cost cutting taken to extremes. The current colour choices are not great, solid white or black would have been preferable. I hope the white version (that is already available in Japan) will get a UK release sooner rather than later. So overall a mixed bag, but as good as it gets for playing 3DS games at the moment assuming you get a unit without bad yellow tint.
