4.0 out of 5 stars DK's back, but is it worth it?, 2 Nov 2003
This review is from: Donkey Kong Country (Video Game)
When i was younger i owned this game on the super Nes and couldn't wait to see how it turned out on the gameboy advance. The donkey kong game i knew on the s-Nes was the same on the GBA. This was good for me because i wasn't really expecting any changes, even though they did add a few mini games, like candy's dance game and a fishing game. Great game and one of my all time favorites, but if you are expecting more from this game like extra levels, bonus creatures, maybe abit of a different story then you aren't gonna find it i'm afraid.

4.0 out of 5 stars Donkey Kong Country, 6 July 2010

= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Donkey Kong Country (Video Game)
Donkey kong country was released in 2000, and was a port of the highly successful SNES game of the same name.

In Donkey Kong country , Kong and Diddy are on a journey to claim back their bannana's from their main enemies King Rool and the Kremlings. For those of you who dont know , King Rool is a crocodile who is a little on the large side and the Kremlings are the small crocodiles whom work on his behalf, a little like Goomba's and Bowser in Mario.
Along the way you are introduced to the rest of the Kong family such as Cranky , Candy and Funky who all offer their own bits of help be it tips, saves or just a bit of joking around.

The game utilised the same platforming system that made Mario so successful, however it intergrated a second plane allowing two different paths in many levels. This was one of the first platforming games to do this and spawned a change in the way platformers worked.

Many similarities can be made with Donkey Kongs early nemesis Mario, for example, the games both use a area and level system. In donkey kong country there are 40 levels split over a handful of areas, these levels aren't just the basic side scrolling run and jump ideas , but they also use swimming, cart riding, flying from cannons and swinging. This helps vary the gameplay and keep it feeling fresh.
The game also has bannana's to collect instead of coins, collecting all the bannana's rewards the player with a 1up life.
Lives could also be gained from special balloons and golden animals, as well as spelling out KONG. Lives are lost by being hit by an enemy or by falling, thankfully there is a wider range of attacks available than it's competitors, you can roll and groudslam to take out the threat, although groundslam can only be done by the larger Donkey Kong. Items could also be used such as throwing a barrel at them and the difficulty of getting rid of them increased through the levels, unlike Mario.
You could also change between Kong and Diddy , who both had their own skills. e.g. Kong was strong and better at killing enemies , on the other hand Diddy was small and quick. Not only this but you could also change to an animal, this could be a Rhino which charged down everything in its path, you could also be a swordfish, frog and bird.

The gameplay was fun and a bit more frantic than Mario, there was also a little more emotion as the underwater levels were very tense wereas the mine racing was heart thumpingly nerve shredding. The addition of multiple game saves also meant that you could let siblings have a go without them ruining your whole game.

The games graphics are bright but were very pixelated, it almost looked like the game was made out of sand particles. Considering how other colour games looked at the time this was pretty poor on their part.
At some points it felt that they concentrated more on quantity of whats on screen rather than its quality. For example , the bannanas span and the barrels rocked on their sides like a spinning coin. The background was full of green trees with multiple leaves haging in different directions, which although it was impressive , the quality was not there.

Similarly with the music, it was a lot more stuttery and poor qaulity than other games meaning it got annoying after a little while, although the levels have a big score of music which suited the gameplay. This included both up beat music for the jungle levels and a more sombre, tense tone during the underwater sections.

There was also bonus levels to add longevity to the game, these were fishing and cross hair cranky. Both of these were well made and was a nice bonus when you got tired of the main game. They also kept track of your score so you could compete with your freinds.

The controls were a little fiddly, the jump was hard to judge sometimes and so was the distance of the roll. Not only that but when it was coupled with slightly dodgy camera positioning, unknown enemies could spring out of nowhere.
Pressing the select button let you switch between the 2 characters , great to suit the moment , although this depended on you having the partner. If one of them died during gameplay you would need to retrieve them from a DK barrel.
The B button was used for everyting but jump, it let you thrown barrels , roll and groundslam. Its versatility was great as there were so little options for button placement.

The game had a good amount of hours , maybe about 20 or so including the longevity of the bonus games.

Overall it was a pretty average game for the Gameboy , there was better but there was worse.
