A New Wii Console Experience

According to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, "Wii U redefines the structure of home entertainment by fundamentally changing how the TV, the game console and the Internet function and interact together," he continues, "The experience enabled by Wii U and its new controller takes players deeper into their games, while reaching out wider than ever before to be inviting to all kinds of gamers."

Wii U combines motion-sensing gameplay with the ability to support full HD graphics. Each Wii U console will be paired with a new groundbreaking controller, with its 6.2-inch wide screen. Previously, video games played on a home consoles have been confined to the TV and offered identical viewpoints to each player in a multiplayer environment. The Wii U controller enhances that experience with different viewpoints available in-game and in differing games/game situations. Also, watching TV and playing console games have been completely separate experiences. The new controller removes these boundaries, creating a more dynamic and fluid gaming and entertainment experience. Examples of this new functionality include:

Within Single Player Games:
  • While in-game the new controller can display information on its screen that does not appear on the TV
  • The information and viewpoint can also change in the new controller based on the orientation of its gyroscope
Within Multiplayer Games:
  • The player using the new controller can have a different experience than those looking at the TV creating a wider variety of competitive and cooperative opportunities

The New Controller

In addition to its 6.2-inch screen, the new controller also features an accelerometer and a gyroscope, a rumble feature, an inward-facing camera, a microphone and speakers. Adding these features to the Classic Controller button scheme -- two analog Circle Pads, +Control Pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons -- will enable a breadth of gameplay experiences while appealing to both casual and dedicated video game players. The Wii U system can also use up to four additional Wii Remote or Wii Remote Plus controllers and is backward compatible to all Wii games and all Wii accessories. The Wii console has sold more than 86 million units globally and greatly expanded the overall audience for video games. Wii U aims to expand that audience even further.

The Wii U Release Software Lineup

Wii U will feature a wide variety of exciting first and third party games and software at the time of system launch. Just a few of those players can expect include:

  • New Super Mario Bros. Mii
  • Darksiders II
  • DiRT
  • Aliens Colonial Marines
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online
  • Metro Last Light
  • Tekken
  • Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge (working title)
  • And Nintendo Mii-based software yet to be confirmed

Technical Specifications

  • Console Size - Approximately 1.8-inches tall, 6.8-inches wide and 10.5-inches long.
  • New Controller - The new controller incorporates a 6.2-inch, 16:9 touch screen and traditional button controls, including two analog circle pads. This combination removes the traditional barriers between games, players and the TV by creating a second window into the video game world. The rechargeable controller includes a power button, home button, +control pad, A/B/X/Y buttons, L/R buttons and ZL/ZR buttons. It includes a built-in accelerometer and gyroscope, rumble feature, camera, a microphone, stereo speakers, a sensor strip and a stylus.
  • Other Controls - Up to four Wii Remote (or Wii Remote Plus) controllers can be connected at once. The new console supports all Wii controllers and input devices, including the Nunchuk controller, Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro and Wii Balance Board.
  • Media - A single self-loading media bay will play 12-centimeter proprietary high-density optical discs for the new console, as well as 12-centimeter Wii optical discs.

5.0 out of 5 stars One step forward one to the side. 30 Nov 2012
By Runeweaver VINE™ VOICE
Edition:32GB Black ZombiU Premium Pack|Amazon Verified Purchase
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The last two console generations,Nintendo have acted differently to the other companies, where Microsoft and Sony were all about boosting the power of their systems,The Nintendo Wii was barely an upgrade from the gamecube,it was all about doing something different with the control system, The Wii U is the same, its caught up with the Xbox360 and PS3 but its hard to say if its a more powerful system at the moment, only time will tell, Nintendo's main aim is trying to be innovative with the control system.

The gamepad is the thing that stands out with the Wii U,is it a gimmick or something innovative,at the moment its hard to say,It really works well with ZombieU adding depth to the gameplay, where people have complained its pointless in other games, but then again those are ports from the other consoles and have been rushed onto the Wii U, Personally I think it might take time but it will be used to add depth and innovation to future games but then again only time will tell.
A few people have said it looks heavy and awkward to handle, its neither its very light and though a little strange at first it isnt awkward or difficult to handle, infact its pretty comfortable, the only complaint is the short battery life, around 3 hours, easier just to keep it plugged in all the time.

Most other things about the Wii u are on par with the other systems at the moment, perhaps a tiny bit improved in some games but then slightly reduced in others, the interface is alittle slow at the moment but will be improved with updates.

It plays wii games flawlessly and even upscales them so they seem improved on hd tvs, though some textures can be alittle blurred but its hardly noticeable.

Overall a very good system, will likely be left behind powerwise when Microsoft and sony release their next gen consoles, but has enough head start and innovation to hold its own.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible Fun. Miiverse is a game changer 4 Dec 2012
Edition:32GB Black ZombiU Premium Pack
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
A fantastic console, if your holding off buying this game due to press attitudes towards it then your holding off from a fantastic experience, I bought the Wii U to compliment my gaming PC as I plan not to get the 'next gen' Xbox of PlayStation, I will have a gaming PC and a Wii U.

The console itself is a good size, looks good laying down or on the stand, the gamepad is a fantastic weight, comfortable in one hand or two, the screen is vibrant and the touch screen responsive and the way the speaker on the gamepad compliments the TV sound in menus and games is very enjoyable.

I only have Zombiu at the moment, other games come for Christmas, and the time I played that was fantastic, the atmosphere and feeling to the game is brilliant, but don't expect to be showered with weapons and easy routes through a level, a bit of planning and looking at the map and making a plan will aid you immensely in this game.

The Miiverse however, is, for me, my early favourite part of the Wii U, its basically, a social media app for the Wii U where people can post 100 character updates with a picture from in game or a picture that you draw, it sounds basic at first but once you get in there and start following and friending a few people the sense of community is amazing and its so enjoyable seeing what people are saying and drawing about specific games and without finding a better way to put it, it works, it just works, its incredible.

So far I have no complaints, the only thing I will say to anyone buying this for a Christmas present is that there is a fairly lengthy initial update when connected to the internet, mine took around 3 hours, if you plan to give this to a child or a relative or friend I would advise doing the update before hand, it talks you through the process but with how the servers will be on Christmas day it could be upwards of 4/5/6 hours before the Wii U would be able to be used which could be a dampener for some people.

(It was reported today, December 4th, that from spring 2013 the lengthy update will be included in all systems)

Other than that, just enjoy your Wii U and I hope you have as good a time with it as I

4.0 out of 5 stars Shiney 12 Dec 2012
Edition:32GB Black ZombiU Premium Pack
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I bought the wiiU after much self debate since the release date, my worries from the update and the system failures were unfounded ( or I was lucky).
I decided I could live without it for an hour or so and so let the system update upon switching it on, no issues yeah it took a while but the PS3 isn't exactly quick either, trust me I know!
The system can be a big laggy after selecting an option but not so much as to cause any issues, the interface with the pad controller is great, intuitive and in my opinion a revelation, navigation is fluid and the capacity to use it as primary screen is a blessing, being an avid game but having a wife who is more into her tv makes you realise how great this is.
I have only tried a couple of game zombie and Mario and I have to say although it's not going to graphics of the year they are clean crisp and something Nintendo fans have been crying out for (me included).

Now lets be honest most people my self included don't buy ninty for the graphics it's for the fun of the games, Mario, zelda and metroid to name a few exclusives and they have a capacity to deliver in spades and with this new platform they will continue.

If like me you were sitting on the fence about the wiiU let me reassure you it is a wonder, will it out gun the new ps or Xbox no, but is that why we have it?
