Show your true colours

Splatter enemies and claim your turf as the ink-spewing, squid-like characters called Inklings in Nintendo's new third-person action shooter game for the Wii U console. Challenge your friends in chaotic four-on-four matches, in which the goal is to get your ink on as many places as possible and claim your turf, all while strategically submerging yourself in your team's colours and blasting your enemies. Splatoon

It’s splat or be splatted! Take to the turf for a brand new kind of battle in Splatoon, only on Nintendo Wii U. Go up against players from around the globe in thrilling 4 vs. 4 online multiplayer matches, where your teamwork and tactics need to be as sharp as your shooting.

About the game

Take control of an Inkling, a unique species capable of switching between human and squid forms, in this distinctive action shooter. Inklings can run, leap, and shoot while in human form, while as squid they can swiftly swim through their team’s ink. Use these talents to scale walls coated in your colours to reach high-up vantage points, lie in wait for unsuspecting players, or cook up devious strategies of your own.

Online multiplayer

Head online for good clean fun in the 4 vs. 4 Turf War, where the aim is simple: claim as much territory as possible by coating it in your team’s colours. Whether you like to spray fast and loose or hang back to make sure nobody inks over your colours, players of all play styles and skill levels can contribute to their team’s result. For more intense competition, head to Ranked Battle, where you can take on a range of modes offering unique rules and ways to play. In Splat Zones, fight for control of a certain area of the stage, rather than the whole map.

Make best use of the GamePad

However you like to play, remember the importance of tactics and working together with your teammates: it’s all about mind over splatter in this game. The Wii U GamePad provides everything an Inkling could need, right at its tentacle-tips: aim with total precision thanks to effortless and intuitive motion controls, and easily check the flow of battle with a glance at the GamePad touch screen. If a teammate’s in trouble, tap their icon to fly straight over in support, quick as a splash!

1 vs. 1 Battle Mode

Battle against the forces of the Octarian army in a single-player campaign mode, or go head-to-head with a friend in the local one-on-one Battle Dojo, where you compete to burst the most balloons. Both modes are perfect for polishing the skills you need to succeed online, so don’t underestimate the importance of proper practice!

Choose your weapons wisely

Equip yourself with a main, sub and special weapon from a wide range of varied options. If you like to get up close and personal, the Splat Roller is perfect for covering large swathes of ground, while the Splattershot is the ultimate all-rounder. It’s not just what’s in your hands that affects how you play: purchase and equip clothes, hats and shoes that affect your character’s skills, so you can tailor your clothing to suit your own personal play style.

This is the most original game I've played on the Wii U by far! Unlike most shooters, Splatoon is not about shooting people; other players act as tough obstacles for the player to counter, instead Splatoon is about covering the arena in as much icky goo as possible. This is SO much fun!

I've played virtually every shooter out there; Call of Duty, Halo and so on, but Splatoon is the only one that is a pure joy to play. Each weapon is so unique - each one completely changes how you play the game! And thanks to Nintendo's biweekly (I think) DLC that's seemlessly added, Splatoon isn't going to run out of steam anytime soon! I love playing online just to unlock new stuff with my money :)

The single player campaign is extensive - around 20-30 missions, each unique and can teach you strategies that can be brought into multiplayer.

The only downside is the lack of 4-player local multiplayer. *sigh* if only, if only...

If you've seen this game in action and like what you see - DO NOT HESITATE! You'll get every pound of your money's worth if you like shooters.

See you online! 1, 2, 3, 4, I declare a turf war!

I first saw this game advertised on TV, and I rarely find any interest in ads I see for games or anything, because they're all the same - deep, gravelly voice telling us that "this summer.....so-and-so rip-off, cliché game is coming out" but this one just showed a fun, bright, colourful game that looked fresh and new. I learned more about the game watching gameplay on YouTube, and it looked as good as the ad had displayed, and in the end, I bought it myself to try it.

I was not disappointed! This game really is new, fun, fresh and original. It is very simple, and the controls and mechanics do not have a learning curve of any sort; the only thing that can take some getting used to is using the motion-control aiming, which you can turn off anyway.

There is not much else to say about it because it is so simple, but basically it's really fun and addictive, and very cool to look at.

The only cons in my opinion are that the weapons all feel a bit limited; you only ever get one speciality for each one, so a gun with massive range, but low power and fire rate, and any other combination of these in any order. The special and sub weapons that I really like all come with weapons that I hate, so I have to stick with weaker weapons to get the "package" that I want. However, the way the abilities work and the way you can complement your gear set is pretty good as it lets you be better at what you choose as your role in the fight.

Occasionally, the game encounters major lag spikes, and you will be shooting an area without anything happening sometimes for up to 30 seconds at it's worst, but most of the time it's all good. Other side effects of this are being killed long after evading an enemy, which can get a bit annoying and confusing.

This game is defiantly a must have, the world of Splatoon is the best Nintendo franchise in years. Playing through the solo missions is a great way to start off and get a hang of the controls, there's lots of these and they test all of the playing styles. Once you think you're pretty good, you can visit the lobby and partake in the multiplayer battles. Each team must cover the largest area with their team colour ink, the team with the highest amount wins and gets the most points (these are used to lvl your char from lvl 1 upwards) even if you lose you still get points so it's not unfair. You also get money from battles which can be used to buy clothes, weapons, head gear and shoes, these all carry different buffs to boost things like Ink meter, more damage, special boost etc. You have to be lvl 4 to start getting the best out of the game, after you hit it you can take part in the Amiibo challenges (must have a Splatoon Amiibo to work) these are the solo missions but using a certain weapon, which differs between each Amiibo. Overall I love this game, and recommend it highly.

Amazing game, its a refreshing change of gritty first person shooters. The only negative thing about the game is the multiplayer maps, I think theirs only 3-4 maps and some people may get quickly bored of theses maps, I think Nintendo are planning to release some more maps over the summer. So apart from that issues, its amazing game, well worth the money.

Crazy Nintendo - they have never let me down. Every console they make brings new surprises and ideas, a world apart from their grown up competion at Sony and Microsoft. At this point, it seems that Ninty has pulled out of the arms race of more polygons/RAM/frames-per-second etc etc altogether. They are forging their own way forward with one eye on the past (e.g. all Wii games and controllers work with the Wii U, and their is still a focus on local multiplayer).
However, Miyamoto isn't steering the company blindfolded - he is clearly aware of the trends of the past and future, and Splatoon is his company's response - an online multiplayer shooter as addictive as CoD, but where you can contribute to ur team's success without making a single headshot, killstreak - or even make contact with the enemy at all. At last, a shooter for those without the reflexes of a cat on speed!
You will no doubt be familiar with the game's central aim - cover the most territory in your team's colour -but the elegance with which the designers have constructed Splatoon makes ink your means of winning, a novel way to traverse, your ammo refill, your means of despatching your foes when you clash in the middle....Ink is everything. Imagine if CoD had you shooting the ground for ages before diving into you bulletshells, using them to quietly scale a wall, whilst reloading your weapon, then placing you on a high perch ideal for covering more territory and spotting the enemy. Mind blowing.
The controls take a little adjustment but are soon second nature, with their own secrets and methods to reveal. The matchmaking is not perfect, and the games are short. Upon first booting it up you may wonder at some of the design decisions and apparent lack of content.
