Lubitsch is a genius there's no doubt about that, but I feel he reached the summit of his ambitions with this masterpiece. The screenplay of Ninotchka is truly one of the greatest by Brackett and Wilder. The seduction scene alone is worth the "price of admission". If you ever need tips on how to seduce a russian commissaire then watch Melvyn Douglas as he marvels at the austere beauty of Greta Garbo's greatest character. Any conversation that includes, "communism, captialism, corneas, polish lancers and the line "do you want to see my wound?" has to be worth its weight in diamonds.

Everything about this romantic comedy is extraordinary. The political observations that weigh up the pros and cons of captialism vs communism are done so deftly you probably wouldn't even need to know who Lenin was to enjoy it.

But the most profound message in this film is that whenever a group of Russians scoundrels such as Iranoff, Bulijanoff and Kalpalski are sent on errands by their humourless employers they do more for the good of Mother Russia by spreading their humour, their zest for life and other attributes across the globe.

A key scene toward the end of the film summarises the film's sublime philosophy when Melvyn Douglas says to Garbo ...

"If you don't stay with me, I'll have to continue my fight. I'll travel wherever Russian commissions are. I'll turn them all into Buljanoffs, Iranoffs, and Kopalskis. The world will be crowded with Russian restaurants. I'll depopulate Russia. Once you saved your country by going back. This time you can save it by staying here."

The idea that the individual is a microcosm of society and can take its society with them wherever he or she travels is a powerful concept.

5.0 out of 5 stars wit and sparkle 20 Jan 2010

I had forgotten just what a delight this film was. Not only do you have Garbo, sending herself up ("Do you want to be alone?" "No!") but also a company of talented comedic actors and one of the wittiest scripts ever written. If you ever wondered what the "Lubitsch Touch" was, then just watch this and learn.
A real favourite.

By film fan VINE VOICE
I absolutely adore this magnificent and brilliant comedy with Greta Garbo at possibly her most joyous. It crackles with super energy and there are some beautifully timed comedy moments that spring up throughout this classic piece of brilliance. There's a scene in this film where Greta Garbo laughs and you just can't help but laugh with her it's such a wonderful moment.

Greta Garbo is on tremendous form as a Russian diplomat sent in to Paris to help her colleagues settle a deal over some jewels. She is soon swept away with the delights of the city and falls in love with a suave debonair man-about-town Leon (Melvyn Douglas). The comedy moments throughout the film never let up once and when they come you just can't help but laugh along and get carried away with the story. That's the feeling I get whenever I watch this.

There's a lovely moment in Leon's apartment when the clock strikes 9:00 and she asks "What does that mean?" and he replies; "Well, it's when one half of Paris calls up the other half and asks 'what are you doing tonight?'". When they first meet is a lovely moment too when they go to the Eifel Tower. She starts climbing the stairs to the top while he takes the lift. You'd think that they would arrive at the same time but she's there before him.

One of my favourite comedies this by a long long way. This is simple and extremely effective in it's execution and the cast are having a ball with what's on offer. Sublime and first class entertainment. Highly recommended by this reviewer.
