Book Description

Marty Johannsen, itinerant surfer, travels to Coral Bay in search of a missing cousin.
It seems everyone in town knows more than he does. He’s lectured on coral reproduction by Czech scientist Karel, on the Wars of the Roses by English waitress Rose and on Catamaran construction by American playboys Don and Phil. Even Limey aircraft mechanic Brian is an expert on the region’s ecology.
Rose is also looking for a missing backpacker, her brother Tom. She and Marty join forces.   With Brian’s assistance they locate Tom, who is involved in a people smuggling racket run by Ivan the Terrible.
Marty finds that very little is as it seems and there’s not a wave in sight. He gets physical with the Federal police and the Russian Mafia and both are looking to return the compliment.
Lenin and Stalin are an unexpected part of the action and Marty discovers a stash of illicit cash.
Eliminating Marty becomes top of the smugglers’ agenda but they don’t reckon on a giant lizard named Horatio.
Karel talks Marty into joining him for a night dive. The coral begins its annual spawning and the two divers are right amongst it.  Karel finds a black box on the ocean floor and begins acting strangely. Marty sees what’s biting him and wins the race to the surface.
Next stop is a visit to the hyperbaric chamber on the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, organized by Phil and Don who are also after the black box.
The people smuggling is a front for something more sinister but who is the mastermind?
At last Marty knows something nobody else does.

5.0 out of 5 stars No worries! Get this book 2 Sept. 2011

I agonized over getting this Kindle book because the price was a bit steep--I've gotten some very good reads for under $5. But I got the sample because I'd been to Ningaloo Reef last year and was interested in a book set there. I bought the book and am glad I did!
Bernie Spain has written an excellent first mystery and I hope he continues with more books set in Western Australia (or elsewhere in Australia if his captivating protagonist, Marty, takes his shark biscuit elsewhere).
The book moves well and is a real page-turner. More importantly for me, since Ninglaoo is an underutilized setting in the mystery world, Bernie Spain does a spot-on job of capturing the feel of a place with transient backpackers, 100 degree heat, dazzling sun and water, and that unique Australian Outback feel. I loved this book and hated for it to end. I would gladly buy more from this author--series, please?!?!

Lots of twists and turns was so interesting from the start right up to the final little twist at the end.
4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good read. 16 Jun. 2013

Great story, few editing issues, good character development, and nice plot twists. The chicks were a little too sexy and the protagonist stayed on the obnoxious side of confident. That was the only off-putting element for me. It was Bond, Dude Bond, Aussie super-surfer and all-around great guy. Good tanning book.

A thoroughly enjoyable read from start to finish with interesting twists and turns. Great 1st book Mr Spain! Hopefully the beginning of a series? Looking forward to the next book in the near future. Once again great book.......
2.0 out of 5 stars I used to live in Exmouth, and was excited to get this book 14 April 2013

The satisfying part about the book is the description of the area, mentioning places I've been, etc. That was fun. The story started out somewhat mysterious, and I was interested in finding out what happened, but it just didn't pan out as interesting as it started out. I finished it, but it was not gratifying. The writing was OK, just not memorable or beautiful or really interesting, just a means to relay a not-so-important story.
