Product Description

Review
An ambitious book...an important work which will no doubt stimulate much reflection and debate...a sturdily bound, well-indexed text. (William Baker, Modern Language Review )

Knight and Mason capture the flavour of each individual text beautifully, serving to tantalise and encourage further reading rather than to frustrate, and their analysis is scholarly and suggestive. Although it is extremely selective, this is an excellent introduction to a broad and complex subject, and will provide interested readers with a solid starting point. (Kate Harper, University of York )

This text provides an accessible introduction to the complex inter-relationships between literature and religion in the long nineteenth century without being reductive. [A] rich, accessible and carefully nuanced exploration of different Christian traditions within nineteenth-century Britain (Alison Searle, The Glass, Spring 2008 )

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant introduction to the field, 16 Sep 2008
Mason and Knight have written a lucid and insightful introduction to the relationship between literature and religion in the period 1780-1900. This is an ideal introduction for anyone new to the subject, but also offers a wealth of material to those already engaged with literature and religion. As two of the most prominent scholars of religion and literature writing today, Mason and Knight carefully guide readers through contemporary theological and doctrinal debate, while always sensitively attending to texts by writers from Anna Barbauld and William Blake, to Wordsworth and G. M. Hopkins, through to Dickens, Gaskell and Yeats. Thoroughly recommended!
