Product Description

How much would you give to live your fantasy? Think fast-your Wishstone is waiting. At Atlanta's Dragon-Con, nine fan girls make a wish on the mysterious ancient artifact known as the Wishstone and find themselves transported to the world that inspired their favorite TV series. Only the show couldn't begin to prepare them for the real thing. Domain is a world without change, frozen in a time of magic and superstition, where the immortal sons of the goddess Reyah fight a never-ending war-mostly with themselves. Reyah doesn't seem to care. The way she sees it, her boys will be boys. They'll settle down once they meet the right girls. But Earth girls aren't that easy. They've got serious issues with this gig. They like their computers, cell phones, double-ply toilet paper. And they don't believe in fate. Welcome to Domain.

5.0 out of 5 stars A marvellous fantasy romance despite its flaws, 16 Jun 2007

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
This review is from: With Nine You Get Vanyr (Paperback)
How would it feel if you really became a character you created; blessed with immortality, stunning good looks, powerful magics or warrior skills and a Goddess selected hunky consort? When the nine members of the "Daughters of Reyah"; a fan club devoted to "Domain" (the hottest TV show ever) meet for the first time at the Atlanta Dragon*Con, they actually encounter the Elder Goddess Reyah, and with the help of a wishstone, find themselves transported to the real Domain with the beautiful faces and skills of their fictional cyber characters. We have:

Thea - a magic user able to assume the form of any cat; from a household tabby to a sabre toothed tiger
Liz - a Mind Mage with powers of telekinesis, telepathy and mind control
Marisol - an Elemental with power over the weather
Brigid - a magic staff toting warrior
Anna - a Sorceress with an interesting approach to spell casting
Sarah - a whip wielding Lara Croft type warrior
Kait - a swordmistress who becomes possessed by the Egyptian Goddess Sekhmet on the battlefield
Pandora - Mistress of Mayhem: what can go wrong will go wrong when her magic flows
Frieda (Free) - an Elemental with power over all flora

The Goddess Reyah of Domain has grown somewhat concerned over her sons' antics. After deciding suitable mates will curb their behaviour, she selects a group of women she meets at the Dragon*Con on Earth. Unfortunately she fails to consider several problems. Firstly, two of her sons are certainly not marriage material; Deryk is completely ruthless with a sadistic streak miles wide and Theron, well uptight is not strong enough a description. And what of the other men of Domain? We have the rest of the Vanyr (the immortal and powerful sons of Reyah) Jagger, Roarke, Hawke, Conlan, Fynn and Aleks and we also encounter Reyah's Chosen (mortals she has granted immortality to) including Vallenius, Alfred, Gareth, and Willem amongst others.

When Deryk resurrects Megeara the Demon Witch, in the form of Lydia Jambon (the bitchy actress who portrays Megeara on Earth's TV show) Reyah turns this to her advantage. Like the rest of the Earth women, Lydia has no control over her magic and risks raising an unbound demon, a creature that could potentially destroy Domain. Cue Reyah's test, sending the "Daughters of Reyah" off on a quest to prove they are truly worthy to be matched to the sons of a Goddess.

With so many characters possessing so many skills, this book would certainly have benefited from a glossary containing some sort of character reference. The wealth of detail contained in only 350 pages is far too overwhelming and I found myself constantly back tracking to recall who had transformed into who, what their abilities were and who they were attracted to. I have now discovered JMWs website contains brief synopses of each character; a helpful guide I should have printed out for instant reference prior to finishing this book. There is also quite a lot left unexplained in WNYGV; namely "The Power of the Two" a rare magic both Thea and Roarke possess and what Reyah intends to do with her spare; after all she's summoned nine women to be matched to her eight sons. Also, considering she's an omnipotent Goddess she certainly buries her head in the sand concerning Deryk, determined to believe his hideous actions are actually for the greater good of Domain. That said, this is still a marvellous book if one can keep a firm grip on who is who, with plenty of original concepts and action scenes as each woman takes centre stage. Whilst investigating the possibility of a sequel to WNYGV, I was saddened to learn that TW passed away last year and can only hope that JMW intends to continue with this series, despite the world of fantasy romance losing a bright, shining star.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun, witty, highly enjoyable read!, 17 Mar 2007
By Anne Cain - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: With Nine You Get Vanyr (Paperback)

This book is a real treat for longtime fans of the scifi/fantasy genre. With its sharp wit, carefully crafted plot and a hearty dash of pop culture, W9YGV never lets readers down. There are quite a few characters to keep tabs of in the story, including the nine spunky heroines who are transported to the fantasy world known as Domain. But that doesn't detract from the fun, and there are some 'fish out of water' situations as the gals adjust to their new home that had me laughing out loud.

It's been a really long time since I've enjoyed a fantasy story as much as I have WITH NINE YOU GET VANYR. Jean Marie Ward, together with the late, talented and sorely missed Teri Smith, have created a wonderful world for fangirls and fanboys to lose themselves in. Thank you, ladies!

3.0 out of 5 stars A cast of thousands..., 26 Dec 2007
By Jean Cooper "eleanordew" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: With Nine You Get Vanyr (Paperback)
[Note: This review is of the ebook edition of this title. -- JLC]

The newest hit SF tv show is Domain, a sword-and-sorcery romp on a planet named, appropriately, Domain. Little do the fans of the show know that Domain is real, and that what happens on the tv screen is a reflection of what happens on the real planet.

Reyah, the goddess of Domain, has nine Vanyr and Chosen, immortal fighters who defend the planet and keep the balance between good and evil. Unfortunately, Reyah's favorite son, Deryk, is a constant troublemaker, and this time, he's making a LOT of trouble. Reyah decides to give the Vanyr and Chosen an incentive to keep the peace, and she handpicks nine maidens from the Atlanta Con to be transported to Domain as the legendary "nine to mend" the planet. When the women arrive in Domain, well, that is when the trouble starts!

The authors are very brave to take on a story like this that has nine heroes and nine heroines, plus a secondary cast of thousands. It's a long and complicated story that takes the reader's full attention to follow. I should note that though there is some sexy talk in the story, this is not really a romance, but fantasy with romantic elements. There are no major love scenes. I enjoyed Liz and Thea, the main female characters, and Roarke and Jagger, the main male characters -- the reader learned more about them than the others. The rest of the players seemed to get less time "on stage," and tended to get confused in my mind. However, I found the story interesting and an amazingly quick read. In spite of its issues, I enjoyed the book, and hope that the authors will give us the next installment of the story soon! -- Jean, Fallen Angel Reviews (courtesy of Fallen Angel Reviews)

4.0 out of 5 stars A New World Dawning, 10 April 2007
By Martha Johnson - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: With Nine You Get Vanyr (Paperback)
This is a fun read. Somewhat different in premise from what I normally go for this book involves a group of 9 women at a fantasy convention (reminiscent of DragonCon held each year in Atlanta) who find themselves transported to the world of their favorite fantasy TV show courtesy of the very real Mother Goddess of the series. Man, if only. This has something for nearly everybody - humor (and lots of it), a bit of romance (for those who are into that sort of thing), adventure, heroic action, evil doings and HEROES - hunky, hunky heroes. Plus some pretty good villians, too.

The characters are lively, the situation pretty believable and I'm hoping there are sequels coming because I really want to see what happens to our heroines.
