Product Description

“Nine Steps to Eden” demands an end to the livestock industry. No more meat. No more dairy.
This is not only easy to imagine, it is easy to achieve. We just need to make different choices about the foods that we eat. This is a book that asks us, through nine simple thoughts, to reject “the meat delusion” - the lie that says that it is okay for us to kill trillions of animals every year with extreme violence, and in our desire for animal flesh plunder the world’s seas and oceans, rainforests and savannahs, and ruin our health and bodies as we eat the bodies of those we have killed.

This book is about our attitude towards those animals on our farms and slaughterhouses. As such, it is about violence and cruelty and brutality and killing. It is about why none of that needs to happen anymore.

“Nine Steps To Eden” asks us to think again. To think again about how we regard those other lives with whom we share this world. To recognise the lie that says that we can remain unconcerned about the pain and suffering, despair and misery endured by animals at our hand, the lie that says that we can decimate and destroy the environment as we please, mutilate and torture animals at will, and kill them and eat them as we choose.

This book describes not the what that we do to animals (I think that we all know well enough what we do to them) but the why that we do those things to those animals. We may believe that as well as understanding what we do to them we also know well enough why we do those things. But there is a profound, indeed tragic failure to understand who those non-human animals really are and also who we are and also the role that we each must play in supporting the environment around us. We base our beliefs about non-humans and about ourselves on a series of lies, a package of deliberate untruths that together we may describe as “the meat delusion”, a falsification of reality, a corruption of the evidence that surrounds us on all sides. This is a fantasy in which we wrap our lives, a cloak and hood of deceit that we pull over our eyes and blanket our minds so that we do not see and we do not know what it really means to “render” a feeling, knowing being with the promise of so much life and joy into a slab of a corpse, sliced and diced for our delectation.

”Nine Steps To Eden” calls for the greatest revolution in our history since we began to use tools and fire, a revolution which will forever change our world ... creating an Eden-like paradise on Earth.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nine Steps To Eden 4 Aug. 2011
By DomBurf
Format:Paperback
What an amazing read. Richard has captured so very eloquently what so many of us think and feel about our fellow animals (persons). The book is truly inspirational, and so very passionate and moving. It is one of the most persuasive and articulate books on the subject of animal rights as has been my pleasure to have read.

"The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated." - Mahatma Gandhi.

A declaration to all of mankind to change our ways for the good of ourselves, our planet and all the beautiful and wonderful non human animals we share this pale blue dot with.

I highly recommend this book to anyone and everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Nine Steps to Eden 9 July 2011
Format:Paperback
A really accessible book on the issues surrounding the meat industry and veganism. It deals with all the arguments that meat eaters might come up with and really quite conclusively shows where they are wrong. A real must for anyone interested in animal rights and veganism and a great sourcebook for the AR world. I would also recommend this book for anyone interested in the ethics of animal husbandry and anyone thinking of taking up a vegetarian/vegan diet.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book everyone should read 6 Sept. 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This book has changed my life. I have been a vegetarian for 18 years & had been deciding whether to make the step to veganism. I wanted to settle in my mind the logic behind it and put away the doubts of 'what will I miss' and 'what will people think'.
After reading this book- there is no other choice for me other than veganism.
It gives clear explanations and backs up arguments with clear answers.
This is the book that millions of meat eaters should read but will choose not to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB! 17 July 2011
Format:Paperback
Every book I read on this subject has my cynical eye checking to see if it's also accessible to staunch meat-eating family, friends & acquaintances.... alas, most do not as they cannot reach the parts that this one does.

The writing style is a rarity in the world of educational reading. It's as if he's sitting there talking to you & like all the best books, the real-world kindly clears off.
This is what makes this a unique wake-up call on the subject ~ he has sucked you in & then spat you back out into the inescapable fact that this *is* the reality of the world in which we are living & sadly most are oblivious to.
He's like a smooth talker cleverly luring you in, sneakily prising your eyes open to life & then making you feel empowered by reawakening your (com)passion & drive. Very clever man.

I think it supports vegans when in need of inclusion, will enlighten every vegetarian & can NOT fail to reach meat-eaters.
A straight-talking book to give as gifts-to-the-senses & will not be seen as "oh its her & her strange cult of The Outsiders".

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Animal Rights Book 9 July 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I really loved this book. I was in tears a couple of times reading it. Richard Deboo writes with real compassion and feeling for his subject matter and I don't think anyone reading this book could fail to be moved by his style, his content and his obvious passion for the animals he so cares about. This book raises some serious concerns about what we are doing to our planet, it's inhabitants, including ourselves and comes up with nine steps we can take to try and stop this wanton destruction. These issues are very real and we need to open our eyes to what is happening and the many trillions of animals killed every year and the millions of humans who die every year as a direct result of the meat and dairy industry. Things have to change and Richard Deboo shows us how this can be achieved. Brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous guide to awakening to the truth. 12 Mar. 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
An excellent book. Well written, and opens your eyes wide to the mass brainwashing of society by the meat/dairy/egg industries. We simply do not need to continue violence and killing of other sentient beings in order to live happy, healthy lives. A great education tool. I am, and will be, vegan for life!
