New Jersey is cool! 16 July 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
This is the first Rob Ryan novel that i have read, and found it very entertaining. The book appealed to me because i have travelled to New Jersey a few times and been to places mentioned in the book.

Now as for the story ... the story is set around Ed Burns (a taxi driver in Atlantic City) who one day sees a face from his past, which brings back to childhood memories that he would rather have forgotten, hanging around with old pals and playing games in the street. With these memories comes a lot of anger. This is when the story gets you hooked, as Ed hatches a crazy plan to get some of his old pals together and seek revenge!

I would really recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers. As the sleevenotes says .. "its half way between The Sapronos and a John Woo movie", so that cant be bad.

It would also make an excellent movie one day!

Nine Mil 14 April 2011
Format:Paperback
Having read the majority of Robert Harris I found this book from an earlier period. I struggled alittle at first (not having a working knowledge of US slang) but as events became clearer I found it a gripping yarn well within my expectations of this author. The desire to keep on reading grew as the tale unfolded. An excellent bedtime read if you don't wish to go to sleep too early!

An excellent read like all Robert Ryan books. In the intro, Rob says that he is basing the characters on a Winnie the Pooh book but he doesn't say that this is 'The Asylum at Pooh Corner'. It's more Dante's Inferno than AA Milne but it's non-stop horror-show descriptions don't pall and the characters in the Lunatic Asylum that Ryan describes are always interesting - if never engaging. The allusion to Pooh gives it a black comedy veneer but this is parallel wit and the action reads like Dog-day Afternoon - with a corresponding body count.
It makes some interesting philosophical points about the inevitability of damnation if born in New Jersey and whether playing games like Alley-O are a Rite of Passage that prepares you for life or the gateway to the Asylum. An interesting meditation on the the corrupting influence of violence - and the necessity of using it to make your way in Modern Society.
