5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best singer/songwriter albums this year, 22 Jun 2009
This is an excellent record, one of the best to emerge from the UK singer/songwriter scene since Foy Vance's Hope in 2007.

Coming hot on the heels of 2008's Mercury Men album Postcards From Valonia , 'Nine Cents From Benelux' is an easy-rolling, natural and relaxed sounding solo record that sits somewhere between John Martyn's Bless The Weather and Guy Clark's Old No.1/Texas Cookin', occupying a gap between UK folk and Americana that has been left largely vacant in recent years, probably since Jinder's last solo release in 2006.

According to his website, this album has arrived on Jinder's own label and with the minimum of hyperbole and fuss, and seems destined to be a slow burning success.

If you're unconvinced by this review, let the music's persuasive charms do the work-listen to the nostalgic narrative of Train In Your Voice or the urgent Waiting Line, and you'll understand what I'm talking about.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mercury Man Jinder turns in another superlative solo disc, 9 Jun 2009
By Dylanhead (London, UK) - See all my reviews
I've been following Jinder's career since I was introduced to his stellar 2005 album Willow Park by a friend of mine, a few years back.

2008 appeared to be Jinder's breakthrough year, signing to Sony BMG with his band The Mercurymen and making the superb album Postcards From Valonia. However, with little news on The Mercurymen's 2009 movements and this, Jinder's first solo album since 2006's I'm Alive, emerging on his own label, Din Of Ecstasy, it would appear that the major label union was perhaps not as fruitful as hoped.

No matter. Nine Cents From Benelux is a vibrant and vital album, brimming with dynamic range and Jinder's trademark depth of artistry.

Very different in approach to Postcards From Valonia's CSN-influenced, polished, radio-friendly folk/rock, Nine Cents...is an album of frayed emotional reflection. Stating its case boldly as a modern nexus point between English folk and Americana, the album's highlights often come from the most unexpected places...witness the frayed darkness of the sub-two-minute 'Frozen Ocean' and the tender re-interpretation of Don McLean's standard 'Vincent', juxtaposed with the dusty storytelling of 'Vacancy Here' and the flat-out rage of the traditional 'In My Time Of Dying'.

It's easy to argue the case that a 28yr old guy from Warwickshire might not have the credentials to occupy a place in the pantheon of country/folk, but any doubts that a listener could conceivably harbour are comprehensively blown away by the sheer strength of the songwriting on show throughout Nine Cents From Benelux.

Don't miss out on what could be the best release yet from one of Britain's finest exponents of acoustic music.
