I have a Mountain Equipment down bag which is nearly 30 year old and has not seen much use in recent years. It was suffering the consequences of years in the back of an airing cupboard but was not kept in a stuff sac. To see if it was worth keeping I tried out the NikWax Down wash and proof twinpack using an ordinary domestic washing machine and a tumbler drier on low heat. I also took the much quoted advice of adding two tennis balls to the tumbler drier which is supposed to deal with any clumping of the feathers. To my amazement and delight the bag came out looking quite clean and after a few hours tumble drying fully restored with no signs of lumping. Well worth doing!

These two products will ensure that your down jacket will last for years (apart from snags and your own abuse). Nikwax are leaders in their field.

My down jaket only tends to come out in winter when its really cold. I only wash it when absolutly necessary as i believe its quality decreases with each wash as the down mass gets broken up/washed away (through the pores in the jaket). Use this product to wash (much better than harsh domestic soaps) then tumble dry (check cleaning instuctions for your jaket) as leaving to air dry causes the feathers to stick/clump together and then your left with a thick coat in one area and no insulation in another! Down jakets arent intended to be worn in the rain, tending to be only moisture proof, you will need to carry waterproofs if you think it might rain. With this in mind the down proof is only going to have a limited effect, for example when snow melts on your coat or when you get a few spots of rain.

A few weeks ago I got soaked in a heavy down pour of rain in my new showerproof down filled coat. I was not very happy so I tried nikwax and can say it works really well. I stayed nice and dry on the school run yesterday which was a really good test so it deffo gets my thumbs up.
