I use this with a Nikon D3200 camera and an Apple iPhone 5 and an Apple iPad. Some Android users seem to have had connection problems, but the Apple version works faultlessly. Just plug it into the camera, turn the camera on, go to your Apple device, change the Wifi in Settings to the Nikon wifi rather than whatever wifi you usually use, and then open the app. Done.

You can remotely take photos by using your Apple device to trigger the camera. The range is just enough that you can leave your camera in one room, go into the next room, see on the Apple device what the camera sees, and trigger the camera's shutter by tapping the Apple device. Then everything locks for about 5 seconds until the photo has transferred onto the Apple device and there it is.

Or you can take photos with the camera and they transfer to the Apple device. Again, each photo takes about 5 seconds to transfer. Or on the Apple device you can even view the photos on the SD camera card that is in the camera.

However, the camera is pretty hobbled by the system - it can't use the usual automatic modes (only P mode etc for some reason), and focus is slow since the camera is in "Live View" mode. The dongle that attaches to your camera is really tiny, and yet it still manages to be a nuisance because it sticks out and forces the flap to stay open, interfering with your ability to hold the camera normally.

Perhaps the biggest limitation is that the photos that get transferred to the Apple device are only low-resolution, highly compressed jpegs. Not good enough to do much with them. I hoped I would be able to check my photos carefully on the iPad - zoom in to check focus etc - but no chance, the photos are too pixelated and full of jpeg artefacts when you zoom in.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB FOR DISABLED PHOTOGRAPHERS 24 April 2013
I bought one of these units from another source as I didn't want to wait until they came back in stock on Amazon. However, I felt that I just had to express my delight in it by writing a review, as the product is the same no matter when you buy it.

As the title of this review has probably made you suppose, I am now physically challenged in the walking and standing department. However, being a very keen semi professional photographer for over 40-years, I still want to do as many things as I could when I was fit and able. This I suspect is the case with many people in the world and anything that camera manufactures can come up with to ease the strain helps no end.

With this amazing gizmo and a smartphone I can once again take wonderful low level landscape shots, especially with a wide angle lens attached.

I now use a Nikon D7100 and along with the D3200 & D5200 the WU-1A allows photographers to remotely fire the shutter, with or without Live View. If you look on Youtube you will see a few excellent videos that explane this system better than in words. Once seen, you will be able to judge the benefits yourself.

The Android Nikon application is available to most smartphones and tablets, but NOT the Kindle Fire. Neither in the camera's user manual or in the Nikon WU-1A box do they explane much about the application. By chance I was directed to an option menu, once the app was up and running, which allowed me to activate the Live View, so that the camera picture could be seen on my HTC Desire smartphone. The default is OFF - why that is the case I have no idea, as this is the amazing part of system - so change that to ON.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy set up and useful tool 27 April 2013
Verified Purchase
Very easy to set up and it's a useful tool to have. I bought this for my nikon d5200 and use it to transfer files to iPhone and pc. I also use it as a remote control. It would be great if the app itself would be updated but overall, it's user friendly and a must have.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worthless 14 April 2014
By Phil
Verified Purchase
Well, ordered one to go with my new 7100. I have started taking more landscapes, and instead of a flippy screen, i thought the ability to use my phone screen would be a good alternative, especially while the camera is sat low on a tripod and you don't want to move the camera to check the result.

All i can say that the android app that accompanies the wu1a is a buggy, featureless, pile of poo.

Constantly loses wifi connection, very slow to operate, the live view takes 15-30s to refresh, clicking the shutter button has similar lag. Total lack of features, no ability to control shutter, aperture, focus, white balance that i can see. No option to download low quality jpeg to speed things up. The app force closes. No documentation. Do you want to view the pictures you have taken, well you wait while the app downloads thumbnails of ALL the pictures first. Then the app closes 70% through download, you have to start over again. When you do get to see the thumbnails, you have to click one by one to select the ones you want to download. Download of 5 nef files took 3 minutes, when the phone screen went to sleep, the download was lost. So i tried again with just one picture, touching the screen regularly to make sure it didn't sleep. I then had a message 'download complete'. So what can i do with the file once downloaded - adjust exposure, crop, align, white balance. Nope, nothing. Just share or delete.
